Today we lift up Shirley Graham Du Bois was an award-winning author, playwright, composer, and activist. Later in life she married, NAACP Founder, W.E.B. Du Bois. She became a citizen of Ghana in 1961 after the couple emigrated there. Later, she was awarded the Messner and the Anisfield-Wolf prizes for her works.

Gabe Sonnier's story represents the spirit of Black History Month. At age 39, he began attending college while serving as a janitor at a local elementary school.

He then obtained a teaching degree and began his assignment as an educator. Then, he earned his Master's of Science and Education degree. He is now the principal of the elementary school where he served as a janitor. Sonnier tells CBS News, "Don't let the situation that you're in now define what you're going to become later. I always tell them (students) it's not where you start, it's how you finish." We salute Mr. Sonnier.
