Officer Matt Rooney was recently recognized for his
efforts in de-escalating a very dangerous situation.
Last week, officers with the Santa Rosa Police
Department (SRPD) were dispatched to a report of a
juvenile in crisis and armed with a steak knife. The
juvenile has Autism and was home with two other
children and an adult caretaker. Officer Rooney, who
has provided training to many officers, including the
SRPD Hostage Negotiations Team, in how to more
effectively communicate with people with Autism,
sprang into action and took the lead on
communicating with the child.
As the juvenile began to calm down, other officers
were able to safely evacuate the other people.
Officer Rooney remained calm and patient
throughout the incident, eventually convincing the
juvenile to put the knife down and go to the hospital.
This incident was frightening for not only the people
who had been evacuated, but also for the juvenile in
crisis. We are very grateful for, and proud of, Officer
Rooney for the way he was able to safely resolve this
very intense situation. Thank you Matt, and keep up
the good work!

Congratulations to Officer Luigi Valencia for earning the City Manager Leadership Award. Officer Valencia was honored today for the lasting impact he created when he stepped up to volunteer as an SRO on the Montgomery High School campus following the homicide. We are very hopeful we can get SRO’s back on campus for the entire school year. Great job Luigi!

This Wednesday, November 22nd 2023, from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. SRPD Officers will at court house square for the “Know Your Limit” Community Engagement Event.

The “Know Your Limit” program is intended to inform the public on how little it takes to reach the legal limit for blood alcohol content (BAC), which is .08%.

During this operation, our officers will invite any volunteers to take a breathalyzer test to see if they can guess their BAC.
Those participating are asked how many drinks they had and whether they believe they are safe to drive.
Following the test, officers educate those out drinking on the impacts of alcohol on one’s ability to drive, and the consequences of a DUI.

The goal is to help people understand the effects of alcohol so they can make smart decisions about how they get home after a night of drinking. It only takes a few drinks to impair, and that’s why it is so critical that people know when not to drive.

If you are downtown this Wednesday, please stop by our event.

One of our officers and board member, Carolina Zepeda, will be running in the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon.

In August of 2013, Officer Zepeda’s brother, Francisco Jiminez-Zepeda, was supposed to be stationed in Japan as he was serving in the United States Navy. Officer Zepeda’s family was later notified that Francisco (aka Franky) was in critical condition.

It was later explained to Officer Zepeda’s family that Franky had been diagnosed with stage 3 Colon Cancer. At just 25 years old, the cancer had spread to his stomach and his intestines. Franky had a successful surgery and was able to return to California three weeks later to continue his treatment.

Franky continued his life to the best of his ability for three years. On November 19th, 2015, Franky had lost his battle to cancer.

Franky was only 28 years old when he passed. Officer Zepeda is now 28 years old and wants to do something to contribute more to the memory of Franky this year.

In addition to Franky, the Santa Rosa Police Department has had active officers be diagnosed with cancer.

The smallest donation can make a difference. Please help support Officer Zepeda and the American Cancer Society.

The Santa Rosa POA needs our communities help and support for the upcoming city council budget hearing on June 20th, at 4 p.m.

In 2006, the police department had 190 sworn officers and 91 civilian staff members.  We annexed Roseland in 2017, and the city has grown tremendously.

We now only have 181 sworn officers and 79 civilian staff members.  We are feeling this huge loss in staffing and the data paints a grim picture.

In 2022, we set the record for the most homicides EVER in the history of Santa Rosa with 12 homicides.

421 shootings were reported to our 911 dispatch center in 2022, and our officers seized 236 illegal fi****ms off the streets.

We had 8 fatal collisions in 2022, and hundreds of injury collisions.  We have less motor officers and accident investigators than we did 10 years due to staffing shortages.

The response time to Priority 1 emergency 911 calls has risen to an alarming 7 minutes and 7 seconds.  The violence, the fatal collisions, and the rising police response times will continue unless we do something different.

City council will consider police staffing levels on June 20th.  We want to have enough officers so we can bring back School Resource Officers and Gang Detectives. We need more officers to make Santa Rosa a safe place to live, work and play.

Please email city council at [email protected] or speak up at the meeting so we can help protect Santa Rosa.
