On December 20, 2025, at 10:36 p.m., Santa Rosa Fire Department Engine 10 responded to a reported vehicle accident at Ludwig Avenue and Stony Point Road. Engine 10, staffed by Captain Sam Hoel, Engineer Joe Perez, and Firefighter Paramedic Nathan Dilly, arrived to find law enforcement and ambulance personnel already on scene. Initially, the incident appeared unremarkable, with one vehicle resting on the center median and another on the shoulder.

As the crew exited the engine, the vehicle on the median suddenly burst into flames. Inside the burning vehicle, firefighters could see the silhouette of an occupant and hear desperate screams for help.

Firefighter Dilly immediately sprang into action. After quickly donning his bunker coat and helmet, he deployed a hose line and began attacking the fire. Despite his efforts, the flames, fueled by flammable liquids, continued to intensify. Captain Hoel took over the hose line while firefighter Dilly made the decision to approach the burning vehicle directly. Without hesitation firefighter Dilly opened the driver’s door and pulled the frantic occupant through the flames to safety. The victim survived with only minor burns due to his heroic actions.

Santa Rosa Fire Department's EMS Division Chief Matthew Gloeckner, EMS Captain Chris Matthies, and Continuous Quality Improvement Coordinator Chris Gossner proudly presented firefighter Dilly with the following "Nathan Dilly for your selfless actions on December 20th, 2025, the Santa Rosa Fire Department is proud to present you with the State EMSA Clinical Excellence Award. Included with this award is also a Class A uniform pin to be worn on your Class A Uniform that demonstrates your recognition of providing Clinical Excellence above and beyond the call of duty." in front of firefighter Dilly's immediate family and Santa Rosa Fire staff in attendance. Please help us congratulate congratulate Nathan Dilly!

🔬🧪🔍🚒 Santa Rosa Fire Department was recently awarded a UASI (Urban area security initiative) grant (funded through FEMA) for $80K to support the purchase of specialized equipment for the Hazardous Materials Response Team. Through the grant the SRFD Hazmat team received a new chemical detector called an MX-908 which is a portable high-pressure mass spectrometer (HPMS). This machine tests for and senses toxic industrial chemicals, fentanyl and it’s analogues as well as chemical warfare agents at trace levels in both solid, liquid and v***r forms. This capability is new for our hazmat team and represents a quantum leap forward in our ability to respond to hazmat incidents and protect the citizens of Santa Rosa from industrial, transportation or terrorism related incidents.

This grant award was for $80,000.00 which consisted of the machine, factory training as well as a consumables package. As of the receipt of this grant funded equipment the SRFD hazmat team has been awarded grant funded equipment totaling nearly $250,000 within the last year.

The goal for the UASI program is to enhance the security and resilience of high-risk urban areas by building, sustaining, and improving capabilities to prevent, prepare for, protect against, and respond to acts of terrorism. This goal focuses on enabling urban areas to address identified security gaps, increase interagency coordination, and strengthen critical infrastructure protection to reduce vulnerabilities in locations facing heightened risks, is funded through FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security.

At 10:47pm last night, the Santa Rosa Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Coronado Circle. REDCOM Dispatch advised responding units that they were receiving multiple calls reporting the fire. The first arriving engine reported seeing smoke and flames from several blocks away and upgraded the assignment to a “working fire” which adds additional resources to the response.

The first Fire unit arrived in under 4 minutes to find a fully involved single wide mobile home with units on either side of the fire unit immediately threatened. The first arriving engine company stretched multiple hose lines and kept the fire contained to the home of origin. Damage to the adjacent structures was limited to heat damage to the exterior siding and smoke damage to the interiors of both units. Multiple vehicles parked between the units were also damaged by the radiant heat from the fire.

All three residents of the unit involved were home at the time the fire started and were able to evacuate prior to our department’s arrival. The residents of the adjacent units were also home and were able to evacuate with the assistance of fire crews. Two of the three residents of the involved unit were transported by ambulance to a local hospital and were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

PG&E assisted with shutting off the electrical services to the residence.

Due to smoke and fire damage a total of five residents were displaced from three units. American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region was requested to the scene to assist the resident of one of the adjacent units with temporary housing.

Damage to the residences and vehicles is estimated at $300,000.00.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SRFD Fire Prevention Bureau.

🌮TRAINING TUESDAY🌮 Santa Rosa Fire Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division recently developed a collaborative medical scenario drill series with involving ally agency Sonoma County Fire District EMS () over the course of 3 days at the SRFD Training Tower.
The goal was to create as real medical scenarios as possible using specialized EMS training equipment, real people to volunteer as patients, and a combination of fire and ambulance crews to get a good comprehensive look at how care is delivered on the most routine calls. The intent of all the scenarios was to find ways to improve skills and knowledge, and to give SRFD crews and SCFD-EMS crews the ability to work together in a training environment to strengthen our relationships and find ways to be more efficient and effective with our care for our customers. Over the course of the week we delivered 42 scenarios, to 42 different fire companies and 38 different ambulance crews.

A big Thank You to the SRFD EMS team for all your work bringing this drill to reality, the SCFD-EMS team and crews, the SRJC student volunteers as patients and bystanders, and all the firefighters, paramedics, and EMTS who participated in the training. We look forward to more opportunities to have joint training again in the future.
