As spring makes its final descent across Sonoma County, we see the pace increase on our working lands: the farms, ranches and people who shape this place we call home. We are honored to feature Anna Jacobsen, whose family’s ranching legacy is woven into the fabric of Sonoma County. Her story is one of stewardship, community and connection to the land across generations.

Growing up in the ranchlands of Sonoma County was not just where she was raised, it was something Anna belonged to. A rhythm shaped long before her, carried forward by the hands and hearts of her family, the Jacobsens.

That story began far from the rolling hills she calls home. Her great grandparents Anna and Jacob Jacobsen came from Denmark in the early 1900s, landing first in New York City before eventually making their way west to Petaluma. Back then, Sonoma County looked different. Chickens, not cattle or vineyards, defined the landscape. Petaluma was known as the “egg basket of the state.”

But Jacob saw something more. Keep reading >> https://www.sonomaopenspace.org/news-and-features/2026/05/the-jacobsen-story/

Ag + Open Space Stewardship Assistant Kendall and her partner Colton recently set out on a beautiful and challenging hike to the West Pole viewpoint at Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve - joined, of course, by their four-legged pack members, Bruce and Asher! 🐾

The reward at the top was well worth the climb. From the viewpoint, the sweeping landscape opens up to reveal the Russian River winding below, with Willow Creek State Park stretching along the south side. Look north and you may even spot the Jenner Headlands in the distance - both Willow Creek and Jenner Headlands are protected in part by Ag + Open Space

Moments like these remind us why we care for these lands. Day after day, they can continue to inspire adventure, connection and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty all around us.

Suncups are a bright yellow four-petaled flower that have the appearance of capturing some of the sun’s brightness in a little cup. They may be found in open areas, such as meadows or fields with clay soils and a ground that is moist at least part of the year. During the summer, a dried vernal pool can look like a yellow lake from a distance, with all of the flowers blooming at the same time.

✨ Wildflower Series: California Poppy 🌟
The California Poppy became the state flower in 1903. This common species is known for its bright orange, sometimes yellow, silky petals and blue-green foliage that bloom in the spring through the late summer months. The cup-shaped flower has a unique feature, following a circadian rhythm in response to darkness. The plant “sleeps” or closes up when the sun goes down and during cloudy weather.

Beyond just being pretty to look at, California poppies also play a crucial role in our native habitats. The flower is a vital food source for a variety of creatures, including birds, small herbivores, butterflies, bees and other inomportant pollinators. This, in turn, supports the rich biodiversity that thrives within our ecosystems.

✨ Wildflower Series: Lupine 🌟
Wild lupine brings serious color to California landscapes 🌸 Blooming from February through July, its flowers range from crisp white to deep blues and reddish-purple, often shifting to richer hues after pollination. With its signature star-like leaves (made up of 5–9 leaflets), this native plant thrives in all kinds of places, from coastal bluffs to mountain meadows and even disturbed areas.

You’ll spot it across the Sierra Nevada, Coast Ranges, and sunny, sandy spots, lighting up spring and summer with vibrant purple blooms.

Blue-eyed grass is a striking California native that blooms from spring through summer, often found in open fields and woodlands. Its delicate blue-lavender petals are beautifully contrasted by bright yellow centers, making it a standout in the landscape. While its gray-green stems and thin, sword-like leaves may suggest it’s a type of grass, this charming plant is actually a member of the Iris family.

After the rains, wildflowers will be filling the landscape again with bright bursts of orange, purple, yellow and blue. Every week looks a little different as new blooms take center stage and familiar spots turn into something unexpectedly beautiful.
Make plans this weekend to get outside and see what is blooming near you. 🌷☀️

☀️🌷 Wildflower season came in HOT and Sonoma County’s hillsides, meadows and open spaces are bursting with fresh blooms.

In April, we are partnering with local organizations to offer guided wildflower outings where you can learn plant names, hear from naturalists, learn about these spectacular plants, and visit conserved lands that are not always open to the public. Our partners are hosting a number of opportunities to soak up the sunshine, and there's something for everyone.
