Another pedestrian has died after a collision on College Ave in Santa Rosa. While we don't know all the specifics of this crash (other than that it was raining and the driver claims that his windshield wipers weren't working properly). Why would someone drive in rain without functioning windshield wipers? Why would a pedestrian be crossing a busy, unsafe road in the rain? Often people make these choices because they don't have any other way to get where they need to go. What we do know is this: 1. Speeds over 20 miles an hour are usually fatal for pedestrians, 2. "Stroads" like College Avenue are by far the most dangerous types of street design, 3. There have been many pedestrians fatally or seriously injured on College Ave in the past five years. Our county and cities CAN prioritize safe, accessible alternatives to driving and safe street design. Any delay in doing so is a choice, and will only ensure that more preventable tragedies like this unfold. Let's work together to actually acheive vision zero.
