Courier Scam

On May 29, 2026, a Sonoma County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of fraud involving an elderly couple who had been manipulated into handing over approximately $28,000.

The victims reported receiving repeated phone calls from unknown suspects claiming to be a U.S. Customs Officer. The caller falsely told the victims a family member had been detained and demanded money for legal expenses to secure their release. The caller instructed the victims to do a series of wire transfers and then to withdraw cash and provide it to couriers in various locations throughout Sonoma County.

Investigators determined the scheme matched a growing fraud trend commonly referred to as a “courier scam” in which suspects impersonate government officials, attorneys, or law enforcement personnel to pressure victims into making immediate cash payments.

Deputies coordinated a plan to monitor the victim's residence after the suspects advised a courier would arrive at the victim’s home. On May 30, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the victim called the deputy and let him know there was an unknown man knocking on their front door. The deputy arrived shortly after and contacted the suspect. The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Marco Antonio Garcia-Hernandez of Los Banos.

Garcia-Hernandez told deputies he had been instructed through text messages and WhatsApp communications to travel to Sonoma County and collect a package from the victim's residence. Investigators believe Garcia-Hernandez was acting as a courier within a larger organized fraud operation targeting elderly victims.

Garcia-Hernandez was arrested on charges of:
Penal Code 368(D)(1)- Theft Of An Elder Adult ($950+)
Penal Code 532(A)- Obtain Money By False Pretenses
Penal Code 664/487(A)- Attempted Grand Theft (Money)
Out of County Warrant
He is currently being held without bail.

This case highlights the growing threat of scams targeting elderly and vulnerable community members. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office urges the public to remain cautious of unsolicited phone calls demanding money.

We remind residents:
• Legitimate agencies will never demand immediate payment in cash
• Never provide money or financial information to unknown individuals
• Be suspicious of callers creating urgency or demanding secrecy
• Report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.

Deputy injured after arrest of suspect in rural Rohnert Park.

On 05/27/2026, at about 7:00 p.m., deputies responded to the 4800 block of Petaluma Hill Road for the report of a subject walking northbound, checking gates and residential doors.

A deputy arrived in the area and contacted Felix Barradas Moreno, 32, of Santa Rosa. Moreno was the only subject walking in the area and matched the description given by the original caller to the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch.

After being contacted, it was learned that Moreno was on Sonoma County Probation for 69 PC (Resisting an Executive Officer). During the contact with the deputy, Moreno was uncooperative, continually tried to conceal his hands, and ran from the deputy.

The deputy chased Moreno for a short distance and forced him to the ground. Moreno continually fought the deputy, who was by himself. After a sustained altercation, a second deputy arrived on scene and assisted with taking Moreno into custody.

Medical personnel were summoned to the scene, and Moreno was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance. Moreno received minor injuries from the altercation, and after being medically cleared, was booked into the Main Adult Detention Facility. During the booking process, Moreno was found to be in possession of suspected Methamphetamine. Moreno was booked for 69 PC, 1203.2 PC (Violation of Probation), and 11377(a) HS (Possession of Controlled Substance), where he remains in custody without bail.

The original deputy involved in this incident sustained a fracture to his left elbow.

We urge the public to contact the Sheriff's Office if they see people in their neighborhood looking into car windows, trying to open locked doors, or acting suspiciously.
