So far we have had a much more "normal" summer than last year. Last July 24th, we were hitting our 39th straight 100+ degree day in El Paso. We have only had 30 so far this summer and not nearly as hot as last July when we hit 105-111 degrees numerous times.

Here's a look at what we are expecting over the next month. Models have very good agreement around August 9th that the pattern will be similar to what we have had much of this summer with an upper high somewhere near the Four Corners region. This leads to isolated to scattered lowland storms with temperatures hot, but generally a little above normal. The average high for El Paso in early August is around 93 degrees.

A look at the most likely rainfall totals through the weekend shows there will be a drier trend with most rainfall occurring west of the Continental Divide until this weekend. Rain chances push east again as we get closer to the weekend, but mostly west of the Rio Grande Valley.

Another round of rain showers expected again in the overnight hours for much of the lowlands. Main threat continues to be flash flooding with thunderstorms.

Today will look similar to yesterday with scattered showers and t-storms starting over higher terrain in the early afternoon that will then move into the lowlands (mainly over NM counties). Areas that see multiple storms may see flooding.

07/18/2024

Showers and thunderstorms will continue for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Storms will increase throughout the rest of the day. The main threat from these storms will be heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding, strong gusty winds and possibly pea sized hail. Below shows a forecast of the storm coverage through the period.

07/18/2024

Flooding will be possible in the higher terrain today, but especially in the Sacramento Mountains which could see 2-4" in some places. This includes the Salt Fire Burn Scar which could impact HWY 70. Please avoid travel in that area between 1-4 pm if possible.

07/16/2024

For today, most of the area will be quiet except for areas along the Continental Divide. Below shows a gif showing where thunderstorms will occur over the next several hours.

Yesterday we looked at precipitation 2023 versus this year. Let's take a look at high temperatures comparing the warmest July on record(2023) versus how we are doing this year. As you can see, most locations are running 4 to 6 degrees cooler for their high temperatures compared to last year. Besides a few hot days through midweek, it looks like high temperatures will fall back into the 90s for the lowlands for the later part of this week. This should be helping some with your electric bills.

The main reason for this is due to the upper high not being located right over the Borderland and instead has been off to the west. The wetter summer compared to last year has helped keep temperatures lower as well.

07/15/2024

Our Monsoonal moisture is expected to gradually return this week with rain chances going up with it. The video shows the chances of getting at least 0.10" in a 24-hour period. Notice chances ramp up toward the weekend.

Last year mid-June through July was extremely hot and dry for most of the forecast area. How are things doing this year compared to last? The Gila region down into parts of Hidalgo and Luna counties have done pretty well this year with many areas having received 125-200% of normal precipitation. Further east, precip has been near to slightly below normal, but some locations, including the El Paso Airport, are still above last year's total.
The biggest improvement from last year is at a Cooperative Observer's location in Redrock, NM where they have received 4.35" more rain than last year. Redrock is located about 25 miles north of Lordsburg.

Tuesday: Quiet weather conditions are expected during the morning hours; however, conditions will become active at first in the mountains and then in the lowlands mainly in the afternoon. These thunderstorms could bring strong gusty winds, hail and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding. The winds will be generally from the east southeast between 10 and 20 mph. The skies will be partly cloudy with the high temperatures in the afternoon below the normal for this time of the year for areas east of the Continental Divide.

Did the sunrise look a little red this morning with a hazy sky?

Well, there are no clouds out there, but there is a layer of smoke above the borderland that moved in overnight from the fires in Utah. The loop below shows the source and movement of that smoke overnight into this evening.
