Om El Arab

Om El Arab Om El Arab is one of the world's foremost breeders of Arabian horses, with lines to the great *Estopa
(284)

Translated to mean "Mother of All Arabians" in Arabic, Om El Arab is widely considered one of the world's most historic and successful breeding programs of World, International and National champion Arabian horses. It began forty years ago in the Black Forest in Germany before moving to Santa Ynez, California. Its foundation mare, the pure Spanish diva *Estopa, is the cornerstone of the entire bre

eding program. Her influence and that of her son *El Shaklan, who was bred at Om El Arab, are unparalleled. Entire breeding programs have been established around the world based upon these two individuals. Om El Arab International is arguably the most successful private breeding program in the world. It would be difficult to research show results from around the world for the past ten, twenty, thirty or forty years because the data is so extensive. What it would show, however, is the unparalleled influence of the Om El Arab breeding program. Recent champions and producers of champions WH Justice, Ajman Moniscione, Versace, Escape Ibn Navarrone, Eternety Ibn Navarrone, Valentino, Aja Justify, Venetzia, Lady Veronika, Maximus, El Dorada, Al Palacio, Bess Faizah, Panarea by Palawan all carry Om El Arab blood in their veins. THE SPANISH MARES Spotlight: FESTINA
gr. 1967 (Mosafi x Rapidez by Eufrates)
Bred by the Yeguada Militar.
Owned by Sigi Merz.
Photo at Om El Arab in 1973.

Festina produced two daughters by Shaker El Masri, Fesihra Bint Shaker (1974) and Feziza (1976). Since both were exported, none of them left any descendants in the stud or indeed in Germany, but Fesihra’s descendants are still found in Belgium and Feziza’s in France. This photo has previously been published as Morisca V (and appears as such on Allbreed). The error was only recently discovered, when another photo of Festina turned up which showed that she and Morisca V had their identities switched when I originally identified the photos back in 1973.

Rebecca shared this video with me from our ride yesterday at Malibu Creek State Park. She was riding behind me on her Mustang “River”. I love ponying Canelo alongside Niño—it’s always such a thrill to have more than one horse in the mix during a training ride!
In the first half, Rebecca and River led the way; in the second half, we switched positions. Canelo doesn't like them getting too close—he’ll nip at Niño to hurry things up, worried they might step on him.

When I ride solo with my boys, Canelo never makes a peep. My sweet red-headed boy is super sensitive and values his personal space. He's a nice horse to pony—safe and reliable, especially on singletrack and technical trails.

The first half of our ride we mostly walk, with plenty of climb, some narrow single track, and downhill stretches. Later, we picked up the pace, trotting most of the way as we loop back through Malibu Creek Park and on to Paramount Ranch. I especially love the Lakeview trail and the extra climbing. It's also a beautiful trail with spectacular views.

The park visitors are usually headed out walking down the Crags Rd trail. Sometimes we wave and keep on moving; I feel a twinge of guilt for the little kids hoping we’ll stop, but honestly, there are times when I also wanna keep pushing on without the visiting. It's a delicate balance.

Yesterday, I was reminded of how deeply people are touched by the surprise sight of our horses. I saw a middle-aged man hiking out, with his camera tripod in hand and he glanced up at us, and then his whole body language lit up with a childlike smile, a squeal and waving excitedly at the horses like a kid seeing his favorite superheroes. I regretted not stopping!

Tunanta is the odd one out among the Spanish mares, as she has no living purebred descendants. This does not mean her blood has died out, however. Her one purebred daughter Trixi, by the Polish stallion Laos (*Naborr x Laguna), 109 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b OCTOBER 2017 was also the dam of one purebred daughter, Triesienne (by Samum).
