Sarasota Police arrest 18-year-old following vehicle burglary investigation, recover firearm

Jaquez Burrows, 18, of Sarasota, has been arrested and is facing a felony charge of burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and misdemeanor charges of loitering and prowling and resisting an officer without violence.

Saturday, May 30, at about 12:30 a.m., Sarasota Police officers responded to the area of South Osprey Avenue after receiving a report of a suspicious person who have been armed with a firearm.

The resident told officers he heard noises outside his home. When he opened the front door, he saw Burrows standing next to his brother’s vehicle with the driver’s side door open. The resident said he saw what appeared to be a holster in Burrows’ waistband. The resident said Burrows left the area and the victim went back inside and called 911.

Dispatch told officers the suspect was wearing black clothing, a ski mask and was riding a black scooter. Officers later saw a person matching the description traveling south on Alta Vista Street and South Orange Avenue on a scooter. Officers set up a perimeter and requested assistance from Air 1, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.

Burrows ran from officers for several minutes but was tracked by Air 1. Officers were able to arrest Burrows near Pomelo Avenue and Alta Vista Street.

During a search of Burrows, they found two 13-round G***k handgun magazines in Burrows’ pocket but no firearm. The magazines did not have any ammunition. Officers also recovered a large amount of cash from Burrows’ pocket.
Burrows was arrested and taken to the Sarasota County Jail.

Saturday, May 30, at about 7:45 p.m., officers conducted a follow-up canvass of the area and found a firearm in a holster behind a home near where Burrows was arrested. The firearm was identified a G***k Model 23 Gen 4 (.40 Cal). Officers found 13 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition in the magazine that was in the firearm. The firearm was collected as evidence and submitted for DNA analysis.

Burrows bonded out of the Sarasota County Jail on Monday, June 1. He’s scheduled to be back in court for arraignment on June 26, 2026.
