September’s second act opens south, and Thursday evening is already making a case for getting out.

At sunset, Joseph Turrell’s Skyspace at The Ringling gives the sky its own little performance. No stage required.

Friday, Venice Theatre brings back Harriet the Spy, the classic for every kid who kept a notebook, noticed everything, and had questions about absolutely everyone.

At Florida Studio Theatre, Legacy: Motown and More has been extended — because apparently Sarasota isn’t quite ready to let those songs go. And frankly, we understand.

Sunday brings the Thalhe Inclusive Dance Gala to the Sarasota Opera House.

And one last nudge before the week slips away: Lynn Goldsmith: Flowers and Friendship at Selby Gardens is in its final days, closing Sunday.

A little theater. A little music. A little sky. A little art.

As you wish, Sarasota.

The long weekend runs four days deep. Friday night, The Princess Bride fills the 1926 Sarasota Opera House screen. Saturday and Sunday are last call for Bat Boy at The Players [18+]. Songbirds of the Seventies, meanwhile, got an encore: Florida Studio Theatre just extended it through Sep 20, so the songbook stays open two more weeks.

And Labor Day closes Monday evening with Overjoyed, a Stevie Wonder songbook presented by Jazz Club of Sarasota in FST's cabaret. How lovely.

Five more performances, then the songbook closes.

Songbirds has spent the summer filling Florida Studio Theatre's cabaret with era-defining hits from Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Carly Simon, Helen Reddy, Stevie Nicks, and Linda Ronstadt. This week it takes its bows, with five chances left through Sunday.

When the last note lands, Legacy: Motown & More keeps the room singing through October 4.

A little theatre, a little cinema, a whole lot of culture. :)

Songbirds of the Seventies enters its final week at Florida Studio Theatre
(five more performances before the songbook closes Sunday).

Bat Boy takes his final bows at The Sarasota Players this Sunday. [18+ ]

Friday night, The Princess Bride lands on the big screen at the 1926 Sarasota Opera House. One night only. (We understand that we will all be quoting the entire movie under our breaths from start to finish, right? Right.)

Shared Light pairs Lynn Goldsmith's rock portraits with her florals across Selby Gardens, and it closes September 13. Two weekends left. Go while the light is still shared.

And Legacy: Motown & More keeps the FST cabaret glowing straight through fall.

Friday night, W***y Wonka & the Chocolate Factory on the 1926 Sarasota Opera House screen 7:00.

Saturday, the Sarasota Art Colony heritage exhibit takes its final bow at Arts Advocates 2–4, with Bat Boy running all weekend at The Sarasota Players (18+).

Sunday closes the month gently: A Child’s Garden of Verses wraps at Historic Spanish Point Sunday. Selby Gardens - Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

History takes a walk this weekend, and admission costs nothing. Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass: A Walk to Respect puts the president and the abolitionist on stage together. Two men who started worlds apart, talking their way toward respect one conversation at a time.

Two evenings only: Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2:30 at the Glenridge Performing Arts Center . Free, with reservations, courtesy of The Patterson Foundation.

Bring the teenager who thinks history is homework. Bring the friend who quotes Douglass. Bring yourself.
