This vermicomposting bin (in the middle! recycling bin to the left, trash bin to the right) with red wigglers is faster, has low odor and low levels of contaminants, and has higher nutrient levels. For more information on vermicomposting:

In hugelkultur, a modified raised bed contains decomposing wood, which provides nutrients and retains water. Benefits: you can grow a typical garden without the need for irrigation, they work in a variety of landscapes, they makes use of wood that would have been disposed of, they produce a substantial yield once established, and food has an enhanced taste due to the nutrients in the wood. We can’t wait to use these beds next fall! As for now, the wood is doing a brilliant job attracting lizards, encouraging a balanced ecosystem for the garden while slowly breaking down the wood.

Banana Circle: The plants include banana trees, lemongrass, cassava, sunchoke, peanut grass, taro, and turmeric. Biomass compost in the middle provides nutrients to the surrounding plants, and microbes in the compost treat any “greywater” (from sinks, showers, dishwashers, washing machines, etc.)

An Herb Spiral is a space-saving living structure containing several micro-climates with different wind, sun, and water flow that allows many plants with these diverse needs to be grown in close proximity to one another.
The herbs we have in here include (starting at the top and spiraling downward) rosemary, sage, lavender, oregano, tarragon, thyme, catnip, cilantro, chives, dill, florida violet, parsley, mint, and garlic! For more information on the benefits of herb spirals and how they work:
