Utah crosswalk safety is governed by Code 41-6a-1002. The law requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in a crosswalk by stopping. There are two kinds of crosswalks in Utah: a ladder (or zebra) and a parallel crosswalk. Do you know the difference between the two? ๐Ÿค”

The zebra crosswalk is considered a school crosswalk, and drivers must stop for anyone in the crosswalk, regardless of which side of the road they are on. ๐Ÿซ They must wait until everyone is out of the crosswalk before proceeding.

In the parallel crosswalk, drivers must stop for a pedestrian if the pedestrian is on their side of the roadway or approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger. ๐Ÿšถโ€โžก๏ธ For more information, visit the Utah State Legislature website: loom.ly/yTYk8SU

๐Ÿšด Safety First, Riders! ๐Ÿ›ด

A big thanks to all the parents and guardians who urge their kids to use active transportation modes such as e-bikes and scooters! This gets them outside and fosters their independence.

โš ๏ธ Important legal reminder: parents can be held legally and financially responsibleโ€”and even face criminal chargesโ€”for accidents, injuries, or property damage caused by their minor children while operating e-bikes and scooters. Here's a quick safety checklist before your kids leave the house:

๐Ÿ›ด Know the rules: make sure your children understand local traffic laws, speed limits, and where riding is permitted (streets vs. sidewalks). City of Saratoga Springs, Utah Code 11.02.06(3) states: it shall be unlawful to operate Class 2 or Class 3 electric-assisted bicycles on a trail.
๐Ÿ›ด Gear up: no matter how short the trip is, insist they wear a helmet.
๐Ÿ›ด Check up: consistently check tire pressure, brakes, and other equipment is in working order.
๐Ÿ›ด Set boundaries: help them understand that most e-bicycles are only designed for one, so no passengers are allowed.
