Today is a banner day in California history: Governor Brown just signed the most comprehensive, ambitious, far-reaching climate change legislation anywhere in the world.

Senator Kevin de Leon's landmark legislation, SB 100, is now the law of the land and California is committed to 100% clean energy by 2045.

10 years ago, as the Great Recession decimated our economy, California's future looked bleak. But today our state is the economic engine of the country, in no small part because of our commitment to clean energy.

Now, thanks to Governor Brown and Senator de Leon, the state that has become America's economic engine will run on 100% clean electricity by 2045.

We know how important this measure is. As the Governor said in his press conference, "climate change is a real and present danger." The effects of climate change are already having devastating impacts on our communities.

Wildfires are deadlier and they're happening year-round. Just a few months ago, Northern California firestorms introduced terrifying new phenomena like "fire tornadoes" and "fire tsunamis." Water shortages leave some communities with just a day or two of water on-hand. Longer and harsher heat waves blanketing the state kill young kids, the elderly, sick and homeless people. These are facts. The scientific consensus is clear. We must act.

SB 100 is a bold, courageous measure that sends a powerful message to the rest of the world: California is taking the steps for a carbon-free future we need to take. This is a matter of environmental justice. And economic justice. And it's a moral imperative.

That's why the California Democratic Party proudly endorsed SB 100. It will keep our economy stable and growing for generations to come and create good-paying jobs that can't be outsourced. But most importantly, it lives up to our moral obligation to ensure our children, and their children, enjoy clean and crisp air to breathe, clean and plentiful water to drink, and pristine natural spaces as part of their California heritage.

Our leaders, from Governor Brown, Senator de Leon and the Legislators who voted AYE, working with countless Grassroots Democratic Activists to pass SB 100, struck a powerful victory for climate justice. They stared down some of the wealthiest, most powerful special interests in the world, and they passed one of the most consequential and important laws in California history.

That's what true California leadership looks like, and despite sabotage from the lunatics and crooks in Washington D.C., we will not surrender an inch of the progress we are making in the fight against climate change.

Democratically Yours,

RL Miller, Chair
California Democratic Party Environmental Caucus

The late Rep Slaughter decades of service began with fighting for a beech-maple forest. Taking that first step is very empowering "A microbiologist with a master’s degree in public health, Rep. Slaughter moved to western New York with her husband in the 1950s and entered politics two decades later, after fighting to preserve a stand of beech-maple forest near their home in the Rochester suburbs. She served in the Monroe County Legislature and New York State Assembly before being elected to Congress in 1986 and soon established herself as a defender of blue-collar constituents who worked for Xerox or Kodak."
