𝑺𝑪𝑯𝑶𝑶𝑳 𝑫𝑨𝒀𝑺 1912
Here are some fascinating statistics that illustrate how much our society has changed. While reading an old issue of the Sargent newspaper from December 1912, I came across a school superintendent’s attendance report. Besides the large number of students, I was stunned by the high number of tardy students—until I remembered there were no school buses, and most kids were probably expected to complete morning chores and help on the family farm before walking to school.

Total enrollment to date: 276
Enrollment for this month: 259
Average daily attendance: 233
Cases of tardiness: 206

The superintendent, Ira Lamb, pointed out to parents, the unusually large number of cases of tardiness and emphasized that “unless this is remedied, it will prove a serious handicap to the efficiency of our schools.”
