Happy Birthday to Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site!

58 years ago, on April 5, 1968, the Senate passed the enabling legislation turning Saugus Iron Works into a national park unit. On the occasion, Senator Edward Kennedy entered a statement into the congressional record which read in part, “I was proud to sponsor legislation on the Saugus Iron Works in this session of Congress. For several years I have worked with my colleagues in the house and with civic-minded individuals who were deeply concerned that the Saugus Iron Works should be preserved for this and future generations to visit.”

After noting the hard work of the First Iron Works Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute and the citizens of Saugus in preserving, reconstructing, and working to get the site into the national park system, Kennedy went on to say, “The United States has a rich cultural and social heritage which we should vigorously preserve. For understanding of our past heritage makes us more interesting and productive citizens today and in the future.”

It took about a year to get the details of the transfer finalized, and on June 21, 1969, the National Park Service began operating Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Paul DePrey, who died on October 10, 2025. Paul previously served as Superintendent of Salem Maritime National Historical Park and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site. His decades of dedicated public service reflect a special combination of leadership, kindness, and deep commitment to both people and place.

Over the course of more than 30 years of public service, Paul served in leadership roles across the US Forest Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service. His time at Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works was marked by his care for history, his support for staff and volunteers, and his belief in strong partnerships that help communities and public lands thrive.

Our thoughts are with Paul’s family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time.

How did water drive early industries in colonial Massachusetts? Join a park ranger for a special tour focused on waterpower. Hear the crash of the hammer and the bang of the bellows as we demonstrate a variety of waterwheels at the Iron Works. Learn how waterwheels were made historically, and how modern carpenters and preservationists repair and rebuild waterwheels.

This free tour will last 1 hour and will be offered at 10 AM and 12 noon tomorrow, September 13. No reservations are required. During the program we will run all six waterwheels at the site at once.

This special tour is being presented as part of the Trails and Sails event series.
