Sault Tribe Seven Generations

Sault Tribe Seven Generations We have hunted, fished and gathered in the lands and waters of the Upper Great Lakes. for millennia.

The Seven Generations principle ensures future generations can do the same.

Wildlife staff are out in the St. Marys River conducting secretive marshbird surveys! These birds are important indicators of wetland health, and monitoring data helps staff evaluate how invasive species and management efforts impact marshbird populations.

As a top predator, migizi (bald eagle) can serve as a key indicator species that helps scientists determine the health of the local ecosystem. Check out this fascinating research where bald eagle blood is being used to track the prevalence of contaminants like DDT, PCBs, PFAS and mercury.

Blood is thicker than water. Scientists are using baby eagle blood to assess the health of Michigan’s environment. Because eagles are top predators, heavily linked to lakes and rivers, they provide a proxy for water quality.

Great news! Fish are a vital subsistence food for so many and its important that we all work together to maintain a healthy fishery.

Researchers have found a decline in PFAS levels in the Great Lakes’ top predator fish species.

Great story about sturgeon restoration efforts in Michigan.

The article also talks about the Sturgeon in the Classroom program that brings these fish into local classrooms where they get incorporated into lesson plans. We are proud to work with several local schools participating in this program.

Sturgeon made it through the dinosaur extinctions, all the way through Lake Erie being declared dead in the 1960s, to now. But they need our help. In this episode, we look at two restoration efforts to ensure lake sturgeon are here for future generations.

Pink salmon first entered the Great Lakes about 70 years ago. While researchers are paying close attention to populations in the North Atlantic and their impacts on native ecosystems, they are still relatively low in abundance, localized, and not expanding in our region.

Pink salmon have been in the Great Lakes for 70 years. But recent growth in their numbers has scientists asking new questions.

It's tragic to see one of our most sacred relatives come into so much pain. Help stop similar situations from happening by choosing not to use lead shot or sinkers when hunting and fishing!

Lead is commonly found in hunting ammo and fishing tackle, causing a wildlife health crisis. Activists say it doesn't have to be this way.

Our tribe is one of the only organizations in North America that is developing pond-rearing methods for stocking Atikameg (whitefish), so we welcome any and all efforts to support these efforts and to help address invasive mussels that have caused their decline.

Lawmakers move to restock the iconic fish that are disappearing from the lower Great Lakes.

There are about 1,000 Atikameg (whitefish) fry incubating in this jar. In total, we hatched about 900,000 in total this spring, making it our best year so far!

Once they are large enough, we'll transfer them to earthen ponds where they will compete for food and develop the instinctive skills needed to survive their release into the open waters.

This is one of the many ways our tribe helps protect and maintain the fishery for the next seven generations!
