After a man was bitten by an eastern massasauga rattlesnake downstate, the Michigan DNR is urging the public to not harm, harass, or attempt to catch the state and federally threatened species.

It is illegal to bother, harm, capture, or kill this snake. The best way to avoid contact with this species is remaining on trail when hiking.

The eastern massasauga is the only native venomous snake in Michigan, and while it's bite is painful, it is not typically fatal.

In celebration of World Lake Day, we had our staff members share their favorite photos of lakes in the U.P.!

World Lake Day (August 27th) is a great opportunity to express our appreciation for the 11,000+ lakes in Michigan and iterate the importance of taking action to protect these invaluable natural resources. Whether it’s spending time in or around a local lake, participating in local cleanup efforts, or attending in a water-related event or webinar, take some time today to reflect on the vital role of lakes in our lives.
