One-Hour Challenge: Got an Hour? Give It to Your Home.

For Week 2 of National Preparedness Month, Southern Marin Fire District is challenging residents to spend one focused hour improving the area closest to their home.

Start with Zone 0 — the first five feet around your home and attached structures.
✅️ Clear leaves and debris
✅️ Check roofs, gutters, decks and stairs
✅️ Remove dead vegetation next to the structure
✅️ Move combustible furniture and stored items away
✅️ Move firewood farther from the home

Then visit Fire Safe Marin to choose your next home-hardening or defensible-space project.

Start at your home. Work outward. One hour is a great place to begin.

September is National Preparedness Month, and Southern Marin Fire District is encouraging everyone to focus on something simple: small, manageable actions that add up to a big impact.

Preparedness doesn’t have to happen all at once. A few minutes spent signing up for alerts, finding your evacuation zone, clearing combustible material, refreshing a Go Bag, or checking in with a neighbor can make a real difference.

🌿 September Landscape Tip: Maintain a Fire-Smart Zone 1

September and October are peak wildfire season in Marin. Now is an important time to take a closer look at Zone 1, the area 5–30 feet from your home, and keep your landscape lean, clean and green.

🔥 Keep it clean: Remove leaf litter, dead flowers, dry grasses and other dead vegetation that can become fuel.

✂️ Keep it lean: Prune trees and shrubs, remove dead branches and create space between plants. Trim low-hanging branches to help reduce ladder fuels.

💧 Keep it green: Check plants for drought stress and water appropriately to maintain healthy vegetation. As temperatures cool, adjust watering as needed.

Remember: start at the house and work out. Ongoing landscape maintenance throughout fire season can help reduce wildfire intensity and the chance of fire spreading toward your home.

Mark your calendars and sign up to volunteer! Saturday, September 12 is Make a Difference Day, Sausalito’s citywide day of volunteer service, connection, and community pride. The volunteer day is an opportunity to connect with the community, give back, build friendships, and make a meaningful impact through collaborative volunteering.

Dogs are beloved members of the family, so remember to include them in your emergency and evacuation plans:

• Make a plan that includes pet-friendly shelter options.
• Build a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, identification and a leash.
• Never leave your dog in a parked vehicle, especially during warm weather.
• Keep pets hydrated, limit exercise during peak heat and protect their paws from hot pavement.
• Stay informed about emergencies and extreme heat.

🔥 Prescribed Burns Planned on Mt. Tam Watershed

This week, Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, may conduct two prescribed burns on the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed:

• Tuesday, August 25: Near Sky Oaks Ranger Station, between Bullfrog Road and Bon Tempe Road, covering up to 79 acres.

• Wednesday, August 26: In the Pine Point area near Bon Tempe Reservoir, between Pine Point Trail and Forman Trail, covering up to 44 acres.

Residents may see or smell smoke during these operations. Please do not call 9-1-1 to report smoke in these areas. Burning may continue on additional days if needed.

All dates are tentative and depend on favorable weather, fuel and air-quality conditions. Prescribed fire creates critical fuel breaks, reduces the risk of catastrophic wildfire and helps build healthier, more resilient woodlands.
