PRESS RELEASE UPDATE
On March 16, 2026, at approximately 2:38 p.m., emergency crews responded to a vehicle that entered the water near Sausalito Yacht Harbor in the 500 block of Humboldt Avenue.
Following witness interviews and evidence collection, investigators determined the vehicle had been stopped near D Dock while passengers were loading items into the vehicle. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, traveled over a curb and barriers, and entered the water.
A passenger exited the vehicle prior to it entering the water and attempted to assist the driver. Southern Marin Fire personnel, with assistance from a private diver, recovered the driver from the submerged vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The decedent has been identified by the Marin County Coroner’s Office as Brian Mullins of Sausalito.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the response and was treated and released. The passenger did not require medical transport.
At this time, investigators do not believe this incident to be intentional. The cause of the sudden acceleration remains under investigation.
The Sausalito Police Department extends its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mullins and thanks the bystanders, witnesses, and partner agencies who assisted during this incident.
