“Approximately one in five adults reported experiencing household food insecurity1 in spring 2020 and in summer 2022 after a decline in reported food insecurity in spring 2021. High food price inflation, along with elevated costs for other basic needs, such as transportation and rent, have likely eroded food budgets in the last year. In addition, some of the safety net responses that buffered food insecurity in 2021 are no longer in place. Unemployment rates have declined significantly since early 2020, and wages have increased for many, but wage growth has not kept pace with rapidly rising inflation.” -Urban Institute (2022)

Some have argued that the food insecurity worry is just that—A worry. Especially when numbers haven’t climbed to the 2008-2012 levels. But it can and will get there with the factors contributing to food insecurity is having slow, little, or no improvement. A better question to ask ourselves when thinking about this is, what factors can we help reduce little by little?

One of the most pivotal quotes from the canonized saint herself—Mother Teresa.
She founded The Missionaries of Charity to look after abandoned babies and to help the poorest of the poor. She was appalled by their living conditions noting they "lived like animals but die like angels". 1979 she received the noble peace prize and has since been the figurehead of giving and charity.

We can learn a lot from her. Not just from her kindred spirit and grace to help others, but for her prowess in establishing an organized order that still reigns today in terms of charity. When thinking in terms of what we do for other people, the goal is to create a system of charity that outlives ourselves. One that is sustainable for more to branch from.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to provide $2 billion in food aid to food banks and school districts to help feed children and families who may be struggling to afford enough nutritious food. This comes amid fast-rising food prices, especially for fresh fruits and vegetables, and increases in food insecurity across the country.

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, usage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) increased by over 4 million recipients – all participants were allotted maximum benefits. Emergency funds for food aid will likely end within the next few months of 2022, which would lead to substantial decreases in monthly assistance. The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) estimates that “41 million SNAP recipients will lose an average of $82 in food benefits per month and some households will see benefits drop by as much as $200 per month.”

The USDA said that the funds are part of its “emergency food assistance” program, which provides money to government agencies and nonprofits to help low-income people buy groceries. The funds will come from the Commodity Credit Corporation, a government agency that provides loans to farmers.

These funds will go toward supporting school meal programs as well as providing assistance for food banks that have seen demand skyrocket since the pandemic started. The agency said it would also increase funding for community projects focused on nutrition education and healthy eating habits by $10 million over last year’s budget, bringing total funding up to $30 million nationwide.

Food insecurity contributes to so much more than just hunger. Lack of food can lead to mental health problems that can last into adulthood for children. That’s why it’s important to stop hunger in children so that they don’t have to spend their adulthood healing.

The elderly may not be our future but they did carve it out for us. However, they’re still some of the most insecure when it comes to food with the number of elderly reporting a lack of foot skyrocketing after COVID. However, there still hasn’t been much of a decrease post-covid with programs reporting as high as a 20% increase in applications or elderly persons found in need of help. With this growing issue we must ask ourselves how can we each make a step towards preserving the health and fruition of the elderly nutritionally.

One of the biggest things we should all remember is that advancing the world and creating world peace doesn’t stop at innovation nor technology (although these are two helpful strides towards it). It starts and stops at the root of socio-economic issues. The same factors that continue to effect our economy, continue to hinder the level of peace in the world. Peace starts at basic human needs being met. Hunger and malnutrition leads to lower levels of productivity in individuals, leaving them unable to improve their livelihoods and higher occurrences of both crime as well as disease. Two factors negatively impacting world peace.

What we can do to fight this is to remember to give back and take care of our fellow persons. In the words of Mother Teresa “If you cannot feed a hundred people, then feed just one”. Although it may sound cliché, one small difference can make a world of change.
