For National Cousins Day, we are proud to honor Kate Flannery Semmes, or Cousin Katie as she was known to the O’Connors.

With her early electric car and imposing parlor portrait, Cousin Katie nearly steals the spotlight on our tours from her famous younger cousin, Flannery O’Connor.

She was landlord, benefactress, and beloved family member to Flannery and her parents during the Great Depression, keeping them afloat and even spoiling them during a very unstable time. She championed Flannery from the day she was born with a very fancy pram until the day of her own death in 1958 when she named Flannery as the successive owner of 207 E. Charlton Street.

To learn more about Cousin Katie and her influence on Flannery’s life, come take a tour with us at 11am, 1pm, or 3pm Thursday-Sunday.

“Most of us have learned to be dispassionate about evil, to look it in the face and find, as often as not, our own grinning reflections with which we do not argue, but good is another matter. Few have stared at that long enough to accept the fact that its face too is grotesque, that in us the good is something under construction.”

This quote is from the “Introduction to A Memoir of Mary Ann”, which Flannery O’Connor wrote for a book about a young cancer patient penned by the Dominican nuns who cared for her.

This essay is included in “Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose” edited by Sally and Robert Fitzgerald.

“Freedom cannot be conceived simply. It is a mystery and one which a novel, even a comic novel, can only be asked to deepen.” - Flannery O’Connor

This quote is from “The Mystery of Freedom”, which Flannery wrote as an introduction to the second edition of “Wise Blood” in 1962. It is included in the collection “Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose” edited by Sally and Robert Fitzgerald.

The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home will be closed tomorrow, Saturday, July 4th. We hope that you all have a very safe and enjoyable holiday. 🇺🇸

“I am about convinced now that my novel is finished. It has reached a stage where it is a pleasure for me to type it so I presume it is done. I sit all day typing and grinning like the Cheshire cat. There is nothing like being pleased with your own efforts—and this is the best stage—before it is published and begins to be misunderstood…”

Flannery O’Connor expressed her delight over completing her second novel “The Violent Bear it Away” in a letter to playwright Maryat Lee, her dear friend, on July 5th 1959.

We had the privilege of participating in a fantastic symposium this week hosted by the Mary Flannery O’Connor Charitable Trust and focusing on Flannery in Savannah.

It was so special to hear directly from the many impressive visiting scholars on various aspects of Flannery’s work and life and a joy to host them at the Childhood Home for tours and a reception.

The symposium concluded last night with Flannery-inspired poetry by .a.odonnell and music by in the courtyard of her alma mater .

We are so lucky to be a part of this widespread and passionate Flannery family full of countless champions working to keep Flannery’s legacy thriving and the conversation going for generations to come.
