Vector mosquitoes still dominate our mosquito numbers, although the number of nuisance mosquitoes did rise slightly. Even so, the three species of Culex mosquitoes that we have been closely tracking in our disease surveillance work were more than five times greater than the two species of salt marsh mosquitoes that generally cause the most discomfort to our citizens. We await to see the impact last week’s rainfall will have on our mosquito populations, particularly along the coastal areas, where rainfall was heavy. Aerial treatments of a number of wetlands in this region are anticipated for the week. No additional mosquito samples positive for any arbovirus have been reported. *WEDNESDAY HELICOPTER MISSION*
Due to the recent rains, Chatham County Mosquito Control will conduct aerial larvicide missions today, Wednesday June 3rd, along the Savannah River Corridor.
The MOSCON helicopter will be dispersing an EPA registered GRANULAR LARVICIDE, an Altosand mixture to treat large areas of standing water.
Residents can expect to see low flying yellow aircraft.

Although nuisance mosquitoes, particularly salt marsh varieties, have made their presence known in several locations, approximately 91% of these mosquitoes were captured at only seven sites, all situated along the Savannah River. Spring tides from earlier this month are likely responsible for this current increase. Treatments conducted by our ULV trucks prior to daybreak have been and will continue to be used to lighten the problems associated in this region. The vector mosquito numbers also climbed in the past week despite the lack of rain. We continue to monitor and test these mosquitoes and have had virus detected in two different samples (one in January and one in April), and have completed our treatment of storm drains throughout Savannah and surrounding areas. Although some rain fell over this past weekend, it appears that there was little accumulation. Staff will be treating catch basins throughout much of the Savannah, Thunderbolt, and Garden City areas during the week in response to elevated numbers of southern house mosquitoes which have made up roughly 55% of all mosquitoes captured to this point of the year. However, no additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus since the one found in early January. Nuisance mosquito species have not been a tremendous problem, although recent tides may help some of our salt marsh varieties, particularly along areas adjacent to the Savannah River. Field crews will be inspecting known larval habitat after weekend rains finally brought some relief to the drought conditions we’ve been experiencing throughout southern Georgia. It is likely that much of the water from these rain storms was quickly absorbed and few opportunities will exist for any large scale hatch-off of nuisance mosquitoes. On the other hand, vector species of mosquitoes have seemed to prosper during the dry conditions, and with this in mind, field staff will begin our annual catch basin treatments next week (about two weeks earlier than normal). Remember if you are having a mosquito related problem in your area please call us directly or inform us through our website:

Vector mosquitoes, particularly members of the Culex group, continue to overshadow all other groups. Two species of Culex mosquitoes (Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex salinarius) have accounted for over 67 % of the total mosquito catch this year. Forecasted rains during the week may trigger changes in the mosquito assemblages currently observed in our region, although considering the existing drought conditions, floodwater mosquito species may need substantial rainfall to dramatically increase their numbers. This week’s spring tide may also have an impact on salt marsh species of mosquitoes, particularly along the immediate coast. If you are having a mosquito related problem in your area please call us directly or inform us through our website:

The overall number of mosquitoes increased during the last week, although much of the increase was primarily built around two species of Culex mosquitoes. Combined these two species made up 72.6 % of the total mosquito catch last week. The two species are the well known southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus), and the lesser known “unbanded” salt marsh mosquito (Culex salinarius). The larvae of the former variety prefers stagnant water environments, while the latter species is fond to somewhat brackish water conditions. The continued lack of rain is keeping problems associated with most our nuisance species down to a minimum. Mosquito numbers decreased from a week ago, likely a result of cooler temperatures and breezy conditions. However, the return of warmer days will quickly raise mosquito numbers. The lack of rains should prevent serious problems with our nuisance species, but we will continue to monitor our vector species, particularly the southern house mosquito, as it seems to thrive under current weather patterns. Please remember to inform us of any mosquito problems in your area by calling us directly or informing us via our website: https://mosquitocontrol.chathamcountyga.gov/

Mosquito activity rose in the last couple of weeks of March to bring us to almost double the amount of mosquitoes we had captured at this time last year. However, even with the numbers of mosquitoes captured to this point of the year, the volume of service requests has not followed suit. Mosquito problems have for the most part been widely scattered, and very little adult mosquito control has been necessary. However, April is the usual time of year when mosquitoes begin to make their presence known, so we will keep a close eye on not only the numbers of mosquitoes collected in our traps, but the types of mosquitoes being caught. Please remember if you begin to notice problems with mosquitoes in your area to call or visit our website: https://mosquitocontrol.chathamcountyga.gov/
and let us know. Also remember this is a great time to register on our Smart911 system (if you have not already done so) to receive advance notifications concerning aerial mosquito treatments in your area of the county: https://www.smart911.com/smart911/ref/reg.action?pa=chathamcounty
