Be weather aware this evening we are now under a Tornado watch until 10pm.

05/18/2026

Bottom Line Up Front: Severe Thunderstorms are expected this evening and overnight across the region. All hazards are expected, large hail, 2" and greater, damaging winds, 70 to 80mph, Flooding/Heavy Rainfall (increased concern overnight along eastern Kansas into western and central MO and the Ozarks), and Tornadoes (greatest concern with initial supercell thunderstorms in northeastern KS/northwestern MO - spin up tornadoes embedded within the line of storms later into the evening).

What: A moderate (Level 4 out of 5) risk for severe weather exists across northeastern Kansas into northwestern Missouri, with an enhanced (Level 3) and slight (Level 2) risk in effect for much of the remaining area. Severe storms will initiate this evening, beginning as early as 3-6 pm across northeastern Kansas/northwestern Missouri. Storms will progress east-southeast overnight. There is a low probability, but not zero, chance of an area of storms developing somewhere near the MO/KS border earlier, 3-4 PM. This chance is highly dependent on how the environment can recovers from current and earlier storms. Hail, wind, and locally heavy rainfall will be the primary concern with this activity if it actually develops.

A Flood Watch is in effect for the region through Tuesday morning. Concerns are increasing that widespread flooding will occur given recent rainfall and expected areas of heavy rainfall as storms progress east/southeast across the region overnight.

Where: For severe storms in the evening, developing further west/northwest and progressing southeast into the forecast area. For excessive rainfall, moderate risk along the KS/MO border into central Missouri and the Ozarks.

When: This evening beginning around 3 to 6 PM for northeastern Kansas into northwestern Missouri. Storms will progress south and southwest with time, with 8 to 10 PM for the KC Metro. There could easily be 1 to 2 hours of variability given how quickly the atmosphere recovers from earlier storm activity.

A moderate (Level 4 out of 5) risk exists for parts of the forecast area, with an enhanced (Level 3) and slight (Level 2) risk extending southeastward. Greater confidence exists with storms developing into a line of storms later this evening/overnight. However, a conditional threat exists for the development of discrete storms this afternoon, dependent on how the atmosphere recovers from morning storms. Stay up to date with the forecast, and have multiple ways to receive warnings!

Bottom Line Up Front: Current storms producing heavy rainfall progressing east/southeastward through the morning, with potential for stronger wind gusts. Line of severe thunderstorms expected later this evening/overnight, with a conditional risk (20-30%) for the development of discrete storms this afternoon. What: Presently, a line of thunderstorms continues to push east/southeastward through the morning. This line has produced heavy rainfall between 1-2 inches/hour, and is expected to continue producing heavy rainfall along with strong wind gusts through the remainder of the morning. Light/moderate rainfall has developed behind the main line, but overall activity is expected to gradually clear out through the morning.

A moderate (Level 4 out of 5) risk for severe weather exists further west, with an enhanced (Level 3) and slight (Level 2) risk in effect for much of the remaining area. Greater confidence exists in severe storms progressing into the area later this evening/overnight, but a conditional threat (20-30%) exists for the development of discrete severe storms during the afternoon. The conditional risk is dependent on whether the environment can recover from morning storms. Stay up to date with the forecast, and have a way to receive warnings!

A Flood Watch remains in effect for much of the forecast area through Tuesday morning. Since the last update, the watch has been expanded further south, with a greater risk for heavy rainfall generally south of US-50 today. Current morning storms, alongside later severe storms, will enhance flooding concerns, especially for areas that have already seen significant rainfall the past few days.

Where: For severe storms in the evening, developing further west/northwest and progressing southeast into the forecast area. For excessive rainfall, enhanced risk generally south of US-50.

When: For severe storms in the evening, beginning around 7pm, entering from the west/northwest and gradually pushing towards the southeast through Tuesday morning.

A complex of thunderstorms is expected to develop in eastern Nebraska and move southeast into the region tonight. Damaging winds and tornadoes will be possible, especially across northwestern Missouri. As the storm complex moves south of Highway 36 early Monday morning, the severe threat is expected to shift primarily to damaging winds, with overall intensity gradually weakening as the storms continue southward.
