PRESERVATION ALERT UPDATE: HELP PROTECT SAVANNAH'S HISTORIC JEWISH CEMETERIES

Hearing Rescheduled to March 19, 2024 at 1:30 PM at 112 East State Street.

Please be aware of a proposal to build a 5-story hotel between two historic 18th century Jewish Cemeteries - the Levi Sheftall and Mordecai Sheftall Cemeteries. Mordecai Sheftall was the highest ranking Jewish officer in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.

Please help us protect the integrity of these important historic sites.
The developer does not have the right to build a hotel or a five-story building on this property and is seeking two text amendments to the Zoning Ordinance at a hearing of the Planning Commission this Tuesday March 19, 2024 at 1:30 PM at 112 East State Street.
If you can, please attend the hearing and voice your opposition (but please be aware that the applicant may seek a postponement).

And whether you can attend or not, please send an email to Ed Morrow at the Metropolitan Planning Commission. His email is [email protected]. In the subject line, please put "February 27, 2024 hearing for 24-000558-ZA and 24-000559-ZA".

For your email, one sentence will do. "Dear MPC, I hereby opposes the text amendments for the above-referenced matters. [Name]"
Feel free to add more after the statement.
Thank you for your help.

Hello Friends,

Please support my proposal to name the former Calhoun Square in honor of Dr. John Aloysius Casey, known as one of "Georgia's Medical Martyrs." Dr. Casey was the son-in-law of Major John Berrien.

Dr. Casey was a Savannah physician who lost his life in the course of his selfless effort to treat the victims of the first major Yellow Fever epidemic in 1819. He was also one of the doctors who began raising money for a hospital for African Americans, which came to fruition in 1832, several after his death, as the Georgia Infirmary, the oldest African American hospital in the United States.

Therefore, if you consider Dr. Casey a worthy candidate, please sign this petition and/or please send a brief email of support to [email protected].

In addition to honoring the brave sacrifice of Dr. Casey, the name Casey Square also honors other members of the Casey family including two of his granddaughters - Frances Pamela Casey Meldrim and Sarah Berrien Casey Morgan. Mrs. Meldrim was an early preservationist in Savannah, working to save its important monuments in the late 19th century. Mrs. Morgan was a suffragette, the first woman registered to vote in Chatham County, Georgia, and the first woman alderman in Savannah.

Here is the text for a sample letter:

Latest Acquisition for the Berrien House: Recently purchased is the portrait of Lady Williamina Weyms Moore of Phildelphia, grandmother of Williamina Weems Berrien, the Major's second wife. Lady Williamina's portrait was first painted by Benjamin West and later copied by Thomas Sully. This version is unsigned. Lady Williamina will now be able to stay for a very long time at her own granddaughter's home.
