Winterize Your Home

As New Jersey Task Force One assists our neighbors in Western New York we are reminded that winter is most definitely here and we must be prepared. Have you winterized your home? There is still time!

Here are some tips to help you and your family:

• Winterize your home to extend the life of your fuel supply by insulating walls and attics, caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic.
• Winterize your house, barn, shed or any other structure that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors, livestock or equipment. Clear rain gutters; repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm.
• Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.
• Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing. Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
• All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear.
• Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions.
• Learn how to shut off water valves. (in case a pipe bursts).
• Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.
• Hire a contractor to check the structural ability of the roof to sustain unusually heavy weight from the accumulation of snow - or water, if drains on flat roofs do not work.

The Challenges of High Winds

Working in high wind conditions creates multiple safety exposures for utility workers responding to outages. Under high wind conditions, it may be necessary to halt restoration efforts for the safety of our line crews.

With the high wind forecasted for today, JCP&L line crews will need to take preventive measures to ensure the safety of the line workers. Please look at the FB message from Patrick Merrill, Operations Supervisor at FirstEnergy, regarding high winds.

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=687086459537066

We'd like to remind customers to immediately report downed wires to the company or their local police department. Customers should always stay within a downed power line, even if they think it is no longer carrying electricity. Extra caution should be used when downed lines are tangled in trees or other debris.

Call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), or click the "Report Outage" link to report downed wires or power outages at www.firstenergycorp.com.

High winds are expected for many portions of our state, with potential gusts as high as 60 mph. High winds, combined with the saturated ground from rain could result in downed trees, powerlines, and dangerous travel conditions. Power outages are also possible.
Use caution on the roads and check https://511nj.org for travel updates. Remember: high winds can make driving very difficult.

✅ Safety Tips ✅
🔒 Secure loose items such as outdoor furniture, children’s toys, trampolines, garbage cans, and lawn decorations in your yard by tying them down or bringing them indoors.

🌬 Gusty winds can also cause a power outage. Visit http://ready.nj.gov/plan-prepare/power-outages.shtml to find out what to do before, during, and after a power outage.

🔌 Charge up electronic devices.

⚠️ Always assume downed wires are live. NEVER touch or drive over them! Know how to report it to your utility company immediately. Visit http://ready.nj.gov/plan-prepare/public-utilities.shtml for outage maps and contact information for your utility company.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, did you know...

In 1989, President George H.W. Bush became the first president to declare the period from September 15 to October 15 National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating U.S. Hispanics, their culture, and history.

The celebration begins in the middle rather than the start of September because it coincides with national independence days in several Latin American countries, including Día de la Hispanidad (or Día de la Raza) on October 12. And with each passing year, there's more to celebrate.

We celebrate all the Hispanic and Latino residents and their contributions to our community!
