Today, visited Grant Watts Elementary school for a book reading event. As part of Women's History Month, SRFD members read "Molly, By Golly!" to 2nd grade students.

The story is about Molly Williams, who was the first known female firefighter, as well as the first known African American firefighter in the United States. The books tells her story of being a slave of the New York City merchant Benjamin Aymar in the early 1800s. She went on to be affiliated with the Oceanus Engine Company, #11 in lower Manhattan.

As part of the Scappoose Fire District's Junior Fire Marshal program, students were given a copy of this book to take home to add to their at-home libraries.

This weekend, participated in a Maritime Fire Service Boat Operator course. Firefighters were trained how to navigate water ways, operate Fire Boat 43, rescue maneuvers and man overboard drills. During this training, Scappoose Fire District received a call for a marina fire reported at McCuddy’s Marina. Our fire boat operators got the opportunity to get some real-world experience with an emergency response. Firefighters were able to arrive to the scene, make entry to the floating home and mitigate a small fire. Luckily, there was little damage to the home. Firefighters remained on scene to assist with ventilating the smoke within the home and wait for the homeowner to arrive.

Scappoose Fire District would like to remind our community to keep combustibles away from ignition sources. We are happy to serve our community and ready if you ever need us. Stay safe!

JOINT STATEMENT FROM COLUMBIA COUNTY FIRE AGENCIES

On Saturday February 21st, leaders from every fire agency in Columbia County
(Chief and a board representative), came together for a joint planning meeting
to strengthen how we deliver fire and emergency medical services to our
community.

The group reviewed current Ambulance Service Area (ASA)
arrangements and district boundaries to ensure that response areas are clearly
defined, efficiently covered, and aligned with state and county plans.
No decisions were made at this meeting; this was a strategic conversation
focused on understanding options, identifying shared priorities, and making
sure any future changes would maintain or enhance service levels for
residents.

All agencies remain committed to working together, being transparent with the
public, and keeping community safety at the center of every decision we make.

Today is Oregon Fire Service Appreciation Day.

This day, established by the Oregon Legislature in 2007, recognizes January 27 as the time for our state to say thank you to the entire fire service.

In addition to our firefighters, the fire service has many disciplines that work together to protect the community, from fire prevention and investigation teams, EMS and rescue personnel, training and logistics staff, our 911 dispatch professionals, and mutual aid partners.

Today, we honor the diverse roles that make our system strong whether you volunteer your time as a firefighter or chose this as a career.

Thank you to all our colleagues for making our communities safe!
