This September, two enormous beams of light will rise from the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire as part of The Honor Summit, commemorating the 25th anniversary of September 11. The twin beams are scheduled to shine September 9–12, 2026, from 8 p.m. to midnight, reaching roughly three miles into the night sky above New England’s highest peak.
Inspired by New York City’s Tribute in Light, the display will honor those lost on 9/11, as well as firefighters, first responders and veterans. Under clear conditions, organizers say the beams could potentially be visible from locations within a 135-mile radius of Mount Washington. Wildlife experts will also monitor migrating birds throughout the event, temporarily shutting down the lights when necessary.

Scarborough Public Schools will be opening this coming Monday August 31st and the Scarborough Maine Police Department along with AAA AAA Northeast are reminding motorists to stay alert for when that school bells rings again.

This morning, Scarborough Police Chief Mark Holmquist, Wentworth School Principal Kelli Crosby and Traffic Safety Education Specialist Tom Baran gathered to display the posters for the “Schools Open, Drive Carefully” campaign and hold a press conference to highlight the importance of driver safety.

AAA distributes thousands of these signs to law enforcement in an effort to bring awareness that children will be on sidewalks, crosswalks, riding bicycles and waiting for the school bus.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling 25 miles per hour is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed as compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just ten mph faster.

It is that time when motorists need to be much more aware and careful, as students head back to school. Kids will be walking and biking to school and getting on and off school buses. All these situations create extra hazards for drivers as well as the student pedestrians and bicyclists. In addition, many new, inexperienced teen drivers will be driving to school for the first time, creating additional concerns for traffic safety.

We all need to do our part to keep children safe as they go to and from school. Here are some reminders for motorist to always be thinking about.

🪧 Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.

🛑 Stop Means Stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.

📵 Put down your phone. Lives depend on it. With the hustle and bustle of starting a new school year, you may not think twice about checking a text message on your way to drop the kids off at school. Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds, however, doubles your chance of being involved in a crash. Help combat this dangerous habit by pledging to not use your smartphone while driving.

🚶‍➡️ Distracted Walking. Stress to kids that distracted walking is not safe. Parents should emphasize that crossing the street requires the full use of one's eyes and ears.

🗣️ Talk to your teen. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 p.m. to 7 pm.

🚲 Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady, and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and the bicycle. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that they wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride.

School will be in session soon. That means more children outside walking, riding their bicycles and waiting for the school bus. Slow down and don’t drive distracted.

The Town of Scarborough Police Department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Full-Time Public Safety Dispatcher position. This position provides emergency and non-emergency dispatch services for police, fire and emergency medical services for the municipalities of Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach, and Buxton.

This is a fast-paced 24/7 9-1-1 call center and requires availability for 10 hour shifts and day, evening, night, weekend and holiday availability (schedule will be determined after training requirements have been met); communicating with police and fire units by radio; answering both emergency (911) and non-emergency telephones; provide Emergency Medical & Fire instructions over the phone for emergency situations; input data into computer regarding stolen property, vehicles, and guns; enter missing and wanted persons in state, local and national computer systems; other related duties as required.

Candidates must be high school graduates or equivalent, ability to work with advanced computer-aided dispatching technology; the ability to receive and disseminate information accurately and without delay; have the capacity to act quickly, calmly and correctly in emergency situations; have excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong listening, memory and multitasking skills; and be able to type at least 40wpm. Must pass a job suitability assessment, and undergo a significant background check which includes psychological and polygraph examinations. Preferred candidates will possess 9-1-1 certification course, Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Fire Dispatch certifications as well as knowledge of the Tyler Enterprise Public Safety CAD. The Town of Scarborough will provide all training to meet State-mandated certification requirements.

The Full-Time Dispatcher is a union position. The work schedule will consist of 4 consecutive 10-hour days with three consecutive days off. The pay rate for this non-exempt, union position is $31.31 per hour. In addition, up to twenty (22) years of prior Dispatcher experience may be applied to pay. Hourly educational, physical fitness and military stipends are available when applicable. This position is eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability and two retirement plan options including a 6% contribution match for the 401A plan, or State Pension System with retirement eligibility after 25 years of service regardless of age, as well as 3 weeks paid vacation, sick leave, 13 holidays and 4 personal days, and clothing allowance.
