Naturalist Christie C. facilitated a class this week on How to Identify Birds. Besides color, there are many other ways to classify which bird you're seeing: size, song, flight patterns, behaviors, shapes of the beak, wings, and even feet, habitat, time of year, etc. Afterwards, residents joined Christie on our garden patio, which faces the pond and the woods in the back of our building, where we used binoculars to see who we could see!
We also used the Merlin Bird ID app on our phones to identify bird calls. Merlin identified a Yellow Warbler somewhere nearby, which we only have the opportunity to see during spring and fall migrations. We never did see it, but it is fun to know that it is around! We also watched a pair of red-wing blackbirds chasing off a crow who likely got too near their nest.
Residents are looking forward to another lesson in birding soon!
