The State of Maine Harbormasters Association is a member driven organization numbering 200+ harbormasters and deputy harbormasters from the New Hampshire border to Canada, maintaining unobstructed navigation on one of Maine’s natural resources, the harbors and coastline. As the 4,568 miles of coastline is used for recreation, commercial fishing, transportation and wildlife habitat, Maine coastal w

aters require proper organization and regulation. Harbormasters are the municipal guardians of the waterfront, with duties ranging from harbor management and planning, mooring and dockage management, public education to emergency search and rescue operations. Coast Guard and the Maine Marine Patrol, the Association takes a proactive role in the use of the resource as well as providing a means for harbormasters throughout the state to interact on waterfront issues, and share ideas. The Association provides continuing education for the public on a local level, and annual training for harbor masters with the cooperation of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard and many other federal, state and local agencies.

After the emergency is over, the follow up regarding a wrecked vessel generally falls on the Harbor Master to be in touch with the owner and salvage contractors. Vessel removals can be complex, like this example from the Wells Harbor Master after a boat ended up on the rocks last week.

The Maine Harbor Master’s Association (MHMA) is pleased to announce the donation of a new Garmin Navigation Plotter to the Town of Stonington Harbormaster’s Office.

MHMA President Will Owen (pictured below) recently presented the equipment, which was graciously donated to the association by Hamilton Marine.

To ensure a fair distribution, the plotter was made available to Maine municipalities through a competitive grant application process. MHMA Board Members carefully reviewed all submissions and selected Stonington as the top candidate to receive this vital navigation tool.

We extend our sincere thanks to Hamilton Marine for their continued generosity and support of Maine's maritime community, and we congratulate the Town of Stonington Maine!

On Friday (5/15), B Shift responded to Appledore Island using the Harbormaster Boat for a medical. This response was a multi-agency response coordinated with Stewart's Ambulance Service, US Coast Guard Sector Northern New England and City of Portsmouth New Hampshire Fire Department to ensure a the best possible outcome for the patient.

During this incident, a recall was initiated to ensure the town had proper coverage while the duty shift was underway on the Harbormaster Boat.

B Shift continued their busy shift overnight and into this morning responding to a reported structure fire in Kittery. This call ended up being overheated electrical equipment and the crew was able to identify the source of smoke quickly. Kittery was assisted on scene by Eliot Fire Department.

It is with heavy hearts that the MHMA share the news of a profound loss within the Maine law enforcement community.

Earlier today, a Maine Game Warden tragically passed away following a plane crash near Schoolhouse Pond in Avon. This is a devastating loss for the Maine Warden Service, the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, and the entire State of Maine.

Our Inland Harbor Masters work closely with Maine Game Wardens every day to keep our lakes and waterways safe, and we feel this loss deeply.

The Maine Harbor Masters Association extends its deepest condolences to the Warden's family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.
