The center provides a variety of guided and self-guided walks, and canoe tours, as well as exhibits, a nature trail, canoe rentals and a Maine Audubon Nature Store. Owned and managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the 3,100 acre estuary known as Scarborough Marsh is the lar

What happens when a marsh inspires you to pick up a paintbrush? 🎨🌾

For Reed Shaw, it started with a mailbox.

In 2024, Shaw was asked to repaint a mailbox at Maine Audubon’s Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center featuring a beautiful marsh scene. After successfully recreating the artwork, Shaw became the go-to painter for projects around the center.

And somewhere along the way, something changed: Shaw began thinking of themself as an artist.

During the school year, Shaw works with computers and helps keep the theater spaces at their school up and running. But when spring turns to summer, Scarborough Marsh becomes a source of creative inspiration.

As Melissa Kim of Maine Audubon writes, the marsh’s “winding river, dancing grasses, and ever-changing nature” offer plenty of beauty to inspire a brush—even for those who don’t usually think of themselves as artists.
