This past week, firefighters from across New England came together in Scarborough for specialized training focused on Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires.

These incidents involve large, fast-moving, wind-driven fires that can quickly spread through vegetation and into neighborhoods, threatening multiple homes and structures at once. Crews trained on evacuation planning, structure protection, fire behavior, and the strategies and tactics needed to safely and effectively combat these challenging incidents.

By completing this class, these firefighters can now take what they learned back to their own departments and help teach the same strategies and tactics to other firefighters, extending the impact of this training well beyond Scarborough.

A big thank you to the IAFF for bringing this training to our area. This class was made possible through grant funding, allowing firefighters from throughout the region to receive valuable hands-on training at no cost to their communities.

We also want to extend a sincere thank you to the Scarborough homeowners who allowed firefighters to use their properties during the training. Your participation gave crews the opportunity to work through realistic scenarios in an actual neighborhood environment and made this training even more valuable.

Training together, then bringing that knowledge back home, helps make fire departments and communities across New England stronger and better prepared when the call comes.

Marine 1 with L3894 and Pine Point Fire Company members were on the water for training this evening.

Those who witnessed various members and equipment at the Co-op should not be alarmed, as weekly marine trainings are conducted every Tuesday evening.

Shark sightings remain frequent off the coast this week. Please stay alert while in and around the water!

L3894 strongly supports and encourages taxpayers to read, learn, and watch the linked content and upcoming meeting regarding the radio communications upgrade project.

On a very regular and frequent occurrence, Scarborough Firefighters operating on emergency incidents with portable radios have little to NO coverage in various parts of town including the Dunstan and North Scarborough neighborhoods.

Firefighters operating on an incident have to leave their partner or crew to use the higher powered mobile radios in the apparatus to call for help. The use of previously installed Vehicle Repeaters help, but are not meant for everyday, frequent use.

The portable radio is the lifeline of a firefighter in every incident. Without reliable coverage, we are placed in an extremely unsafe situation.

In areas where portable radio coverage is spotty, cell phone coverage is likely also spotty and cannot always be relied on as a backup.

Please review and consider these factors as the decisions on voting nears later this year.

This year, L3894 member Erin Sandler is completing her sixth annual Cross for Lifeflight!

In August of 2020, Erin lost her brother in a tragic accident in Northern Maine. Immediately following the accident, LifeFlight of Maine responded and flew him approximately 110 miles, giving him every possible chance.

In an effort of appreciation and recognition for the service and care that Lifeflight can bring, Erin takes to honoring her brother by participating in the cross.

This year, Erin has taken a step above and beyond to challenge herself and her goals. Her biking distance of 110 miles will be accompanied by 110 miles of combined hiking, kayaking, and walking/running.

We applaud the nearby off-duty Connecticut firefighters for their quick actions on Sea Meadows Ln yesterday afternoon!

After evacuating the home, the Off-Duty Firefighters using nearby extinguishers and garden hoses greatly contributed to stopping the fire from spreading further into the home.

First arriving crews on scene found smoke showing from the eaves and fire in the basement that had spread from the outside.

The Scarborough Fire Department said the two residents escaped without injury because of the quick actions of the visiting firefighters.
