The Explorers got to work breaking things last night while learning forcible entry techniques. They focused on an inward-swinging door, practicing different methods to force it open. It proved to be a challenging door, but through strength, sweat, and determination, the Explorers successfully made entry.

The First Annual Chili Cook-Off was a huge success!

On Thursday night, the Explorers attended the First Annual Scarborough Chili Cook-Off, and we had an amazing time. This event was held to benefit the Fire Explorers, as well as the Scarborough Education Foundation and Project Grace.

Congratulations to Gritty McDuff's Portland for taking home the win! We’d also like to thank Scarborough Living Magazine and Ruth Rayburn Summers for organizing such a fantastic event.

We’re already looking forward to the 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off next year!

Explorers focused on self-extrication skills last night, working through some challenging obstacles. They learned about wall breaching and entanglement scenarios that can occur during real incidents.

In the first scenario, explorers crawled through a makeshift entanglement course. If they became stuck, they were required to remain calm and carefully maneuver themselves out of the situation.

The second scenario involved navigating through a wall breach while fully geared and packed. This tested both their spatial awareness and composure under pressure.

These explorers put in a lot of hard work and demonstrated great focus, staying calm and determined as they worked through each challenge.

Last night our Explorers trained on the proper procedure for calling a MAYDAY on the fireground.

During the scenario, crews were assigned to search an area for a victim. As with any fire scene, conditions can change quickly. One of the search crews simulated a firefighter becoming injured and unable to exit the building on their own. The crew then had to declare a MAYDAY and follow the proper emergency procedures.

Meanwhile, another team was outside the structure learning about the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) and their role on the fireground. Once the simulated MAYDAY was called, the RIT crew was activated. Their job was to locate the downed firefighter, package them, and remove them safely from the building.

Explorers rotated through multiple scenarios, taking turns serving as the RIT crew and the search crew calling the MAYDAY.

Our Explorers continue to build their skills and improve every week through hands-on training and teamwork. Great job by everyone involved!

Tonight our Explorers got to work learning one of the most important post-fireground tasks — properly loading hose back onto the engine after a structure fire.

On real fire scenes, Explorers play an important support role. They assist with rehab for firefighters, and once suppression operations are complete, they help crews reload hose and equipment so the apparatus can get back in service and ready for the next call.

These skills may seem simple, but they are a critical part of fireground operations and teamwork. Learning them now helps build the foundation these young men and women need as they continue working toward becoming future firefighters.

Great work tonight by all the Explorers! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

This week our Explorers took on zero-visibility search & rescue scenarios, navigating their way out of a structure by following their hose line with blacked-out masks — simulating real smoke conditions. Talk about trusting your training and staying calm under pressure!

They also practiced victim drags and removal techniques, sharpening the skills needed to safely locate and remove a victim from inside a structure.

We’re proud of the hard work, teamwork, and dedication these future firefighters continue to show every week!

If you’re between the ages of 14–18 and interested in a future in Firefighting or EMS, we’d love to hear from you! Contact us at [email protected] for more information on how to join.

The Scarborough Fire Explorers were back at it last night, continuing to work on search and rescue techniques. During the training, explorers were challenged to search a dark room with their SCBA masks blacked out so they could not see anything.

Explorers worked their way through the room to locate the victim and successfully extricate the victim safely. Strong communication was essential, as each team needed to stay connected with their partner and work together to complete the rescue.

Great teamwork and hands-on training continue to build important skills for our future firefighters!

Explorers stayed busy last night working through search and rescue evolutions. They masked up at the front door, made entry, and searched designated areas for a victim. Once the victim was found, Explorers had to quickly decide the best way to extricate them from the structure. Strong teamwork and solid skills were key throughout the training. Multiple evolutions were completed, with the Explorers working together as a full company each time.
