Happy Women’s Equality Day! Today, August 26th marks 106 years since the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted women the right to vote in the United States. It has been more than a century - yet our fight for equality is far from over. From pay equity to reproductive rights, we still have work to do. I remain committed to championing legislation that advances women’s rights and opportunities.

My nurse practitioner bill is now in effect! This legislation allows nurse practitioners to sign medical documents related to student athletes, school bus drivers and monitors, temporary disability parking permits, and jury duty excuses for breastfeeding mothers. By expanding what nurse practitioners are authorized to sign, we’re making everyday healthcare and essential services more accessible for New Yorkers.

Protecting our communities means confronting new threats before they put New Yorkers at risk. Two new laws now in effect crack down on ghost guns, convertible pistols and 3-D printed fi****ms, while another strengthens safeguards against unlawful drone use and credible drone threats (Ch. 55 of 2026, Parts C & D).

This week there is an important event which could significantly impact Lake Isle and the surrounding community.

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a virtual public comment hearing on Thursday, August 27 at 6:00 PM regarding the DEC permit application to remove a portion of the Lake Isle Dam’s spillway, which is the precursor to the 7’ lowering of the water level of the lake. This hearing is an important opportunity for residents to make their voices heard, and I strongly encourage you to participate. I plan to provide comments expressing my opposition to approving the permit and to lowering the lake, as I believe we should be working toward a solution that addresses fixing the dam and preserving the lake.

You can make your voice heard in either of two ways:

1. Attend the virtual public hearing on August 27 at 6:00 PM via Webex. Advance registration is required if you would like to speak (link in comments).
2. Submit a written comment to the DEC by September 4, 2026. Comments should be sent to Rebecca Crist, NYSDEC Region 3 Headquarters, 21 S Putt Corners Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561, emailed to [email protected], or called in at (845) 256-3014.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to tour the Scarsdale Unit Community Residence in Greenacres, operated by Search for Change and the Association for Community Living. These Office of Mental Health programs are critical for our community. Thank you to the dedicated teams who work every day to ensure every New Yorker has access to safe, supportive, and compassionate residential care.
