This evening, Scarsdale’s Professional Firefighters responded via automatic mutual aid to assist Greenburgh Uniformed Firefighters Association - IAFF 1586 with a residential structure fire.

While Greenburgh’s first-due units conducted an aggressive interior fire attack using two hose lines, Scarsdale’s Truck Company was assigned to roof venting operations. Proper ventilation, in conjunction with fire suppression, is essential to removing heat, toxic gases, and smoke, which improves visibility and limits fire spread.

The immediate response from Greenburgh’s Professionals and the automatic aid provided by Scarsdale were paramount to achieving a quick knockdown and ensuring minimal damage to the structure.

On Sunday, March 22nd, The Scarsdale Firefighters showed up to help hand out water and cheer for the 56th Annual Scarsdale 15k and 4 Mile Race. Ladder 28, Car 2432 and several off duty members came out to show their support for the race, including Chief Christopher Mytych, who took part in the 15k race.

Today members traveled to Albany to support and stand in solidarity with 15,000 other proud Union members across New York State, fighting to Fix Tier Six!

The fight to Fix Tier 6 is about fairness, equity, and a better retirement for the hard-working
public servants who keep our communities running, specifically matching parity to those employees in Tier 4!

Thousands of Firefighters, Police officers, Nurses, Teachers, Correction officers, DPW, and all other general employees standing arm in arm, side by side, fighting for what is right!

This morning, our professional firefighters were dispatched to a reported floor fire caused by fireplace embers. Responding within a minute and arriving within four minutes, units successfully extinguished and removed a plastic container filled with ashes from a fire the previous evening. Firefighters also removed a portion of the floor to check for and extinguish any fire extension. With situation under control our Automatic Aid units from - IAFF 1586 were released with thanks. Within 30 minutes Scarsdale units returned to service.

Thanks to the quick activation of the 911 system and the rapid response of our on-duty members, damage to the home was minimized, resulting in a safe outcome during this period of extreme cold.

With the extended use of fireplaces, we encourage homeowners to familiarize themselves with proper operation and ash disposal. We highly recommend flue inspections to ensure your system is in good working order and free of damage from weather or animals.

Please remember to use only metal or similar fireproof containers for hot ashes and embers. These containers should never be stored inside or next to a building; instead, keep them safely outside and away from your home.

Yesterday afternoon at 1:41 p.m., the Scarsdale Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire. On-duty crews from all three firehouses arrived within minutes to find smoke emanating from the walls of a two-story wood-frame home. Mutual aid units from Greenburgh Uniformed Firefighters Association - IAFF 1586 also responded to provide additional personnel.

Thanks to the homeowner’s prompt 911 call and the quick actions of the career firefighters on the scene, the fire—which was caused by a faulty electrical outlet—was swiftly contained before it could spread further. Firefighters opened the walls to extinguish the flames and ensure the fire was completely suppressed.

No injuries were reported, and the home sustained only minor damage.

Today our newest Probationary Firefighter Nick Camardella graduated from the Westchester County Career Chiefs Academy.

The 20 week academy combined challenging lessons with intense physical skills. Nick gained knowledge and developed techniques across many different firefighting disciplines that he will carry throughout his career.

He will join our members next week and the learning will continue. For the next 8 months of his probationary period our members will help Nick hone in his fire ground skills and help familiarize him with the Village of Scarsdale.

Congratulations Nick and we are excited for you to join our Scarsdale Career Firefighters. Have a safe and healthy career!

You may ask yourself, "why do fire hydrants have those red and white poles attached to them?" Well as this heavy snow fall has illustrated, it's to help locate them when they get buried under piles of snow.

Your professional firefighters have been out clearing many of them of snow and making them accessible in the event we need them for a fire.

This is one of those community efforts where your help could mean the difference between life and death, or small fire and a home becoming fully involved with flames.

Scarsdale has almost 1,000 fire hydrants across the town, surely one is close by your own home. Help us help you by clearing a three foot radius circle around any hydrants you feel comfortably safe digging out. It makes all the difference when seconds count.

Your professional firefighters are on duty with extra staffing to meet the needs of our residents during this major snow event. Our trucks are chained and our highway department is working hard to keep the roads clear.

We still implore those not essentially needed to travel to please remain indoors and out of harms way. This storm will only intensify over the afternoon and evening.

Keep jackets, boots and other extreme cold weather apparel at the ready by your front door in the event you must evacuate in a hurry.

Dear Neighbors,

As many of us know severe winter weather will be affecting the region this weekend. Double digit snowfall and frigid temperatures will hamper us all. We highly recommend stocking up with essentials and make every effort to stay off the roads and at home.

To ensure safety during hazardous winter weather, your local firefighters recommend the following guidelines:

HEATING

- Furnaces: Ensure professional servicing, proper cleaning, and outside ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide leaks.
- Fireplaces: Have chimneys inspected and cleaned before use, and burn only approved fuels.
- Space Heaters: Plug directly into outlets (no extension cords), keep three feet away from flammables, and never leave them unattended or plugged in when not in use.

CARBON MONOXIDE
Prevent poisoning by never using generators or propane heaters indoors. Keep kitchen vents open while cooking and maintain working detectors. If an alarm sounds, evacuate, call 9-1-1, and do not re-enter until cleared by firefighters.

VEHICLE SAFETY
Maintain your battery, wipers, and tires. Keep an emergency kit with warm clothes, water, a flashlight, and blankets; use sand for traction and an ice scraper in snowy conditions. Never warm up your vehicle in a garage or indoors.

FIRE HYDRANTS
We ask that you clear snow from your sidewalks and driveways, and avoid piling snow near fire hydrants. If you see a hydrant buried in snow, please clear it. Accessible hydrants significantly improve our response time, allowing us to focus on fighting fires rather than shoveling snow.
