Motivational speaker Chris Singleton is sharing his mission of unity and love with seventh- and eighth-grade students across District 54 this week.

Singleton is a former professional baseball player (drafted by the Cubs in 2017), who became a motivational speaker after the loss of his mother in a Charleston church shooting in 2015.

Now Chris encourages students to make a powerful impact in their own community by respecting, accepting and celebrating others.

During his high-energy assemblies, he tells students the same thing he tells his own children at the start of the school year: “We’re going to be kind; we’re going to be a leader; and we’re going to have fun.”

Meet Alba Sabuco - a high-energy dual language teacher at MacArthur International Spanish Academy who almost didn’t become a teacher. “Then I tried teaching and the very first day in the classroom, I knew it was for me. I knew I could help so many people.”

For this week's , we sat down with Alba to learn a little more about her background, her favorites and why she loves being a teacher.

😯Something your students would be surprise to learn about you?
Alba originally studied to become an interpreter. “They would be surprised to learn that because they see how passionate I am about teaching.”

🏫Favorite subject when you were in school?
English

💙The best part of this job?
“You get to love so many kids and be part of their lives. During Spanish, their faces light up when they say it correctly. Those little moments make my job amazing.”

📗Book you recommend to students?

🤔One thing you wish every student knew?
“That they are capable of a lot of things when they trust themselves. Learning a second language is all about risk taking.”

Alba said she’s excited to see how they will continue to grow. “Whenever I think they’ve reached the peak, they keep surprising me.”

Our D54 Family is officially complete! Our kindergarten and Early Learning Center students had an amazing first day of school today.

Across the district, our youngest students, like these Collins kindergartners, explored their schools and classrooms, learned new routines and made new friends.
