Awful: as of June 1st, Illinois' "People Over Parking" law is now in effect. The law will force parking spaces in many parts of Illinois to be eliminated. Democrats want to get rid of "car dependency" in Illinois.
Democrats approved the law to arm twist Illinoisans get rid of their cars and trucks in an effort to make more space to for high density housing complexes.
Details: The law, signed by J.B. Pritzker (D), bans local governments (your town, county, etc) from requiring minimum parking spaces for new residential and commercial developments located near transit hubs—within half a mile of stations or an eighth of a mile of frequent bus routes.
If your community has bus or train service, your community will be will be affected.
Result: as of Monday June 1, you can say goodbye to parking! New apartment buildings, retail stores and restaurants could be be built with zero parking spots.
Democrat logic: The claim the law fights "car dependency" and will boost high density housing. In reality, the law will gut parking supply where it's needed most. This means that developers, facing will face no mandate, and will build fewer or zero parking spots to cut costs and cram in more housing units. Existing on-street parking will face fiercer competition from new residents and workers who still own cars.
Analysis: For you shameful people who insist on owning a vehicle, expect higher costs, endless circling for spots, blocked driveways, and tickets. Families, commuters, tradespeople, and seniors who rely on cars get punished while transit riders are prioritized. In a state with harsh winters and sprawling suburbs, forcing "people over parking" simply eliminates practical parking for motorists.
This anti-car experiment will make daily life harder and less affordable for millions who choose to drive. Bad policy for real people. This is one of the dumbest laws ever approved by J.B Illinois Democrats and JB Pritzker!
The Mayor of Cary, IL, Mark Kownick, recently spoke out against this law. In his recent annual State of the Village address, he stated “Our main thing right now is loss of local control, They want to take away all of our authority, and that just can’t happen.”
The "People over Parking" provision was hidden in the Chicago Transit Bailout package that was approved by Democrats in December.
