Bringing warmth to winter: Rotarians donate coats to kids in need

As temperatures begin to drop, the Rotary Club of Schaumburg A.M. stepped up to ensure children in need in our community stay warm this winter.

In a heartwarming show of generosity, this club recently donated dozens of brand-new high quality winter coats to kids from families who are struggling to make ends meet. These children attend Schaumburg’s Brightpoint Marletta Darnall Child & Family Center that offers early childhood care and education for kids age 6 weeks to 5.

This donation is inspired by the belief that every child deserves to feel safe, warm, and cared for. This was both a humbling experience and an opportunity for club members to make a difference in a child’s life.

Coats were purchased from Operation Warm and paid for through a combination of funds coming from the club’s fundraising efforts at Schaumburg’s Septemberfest, the receipt of grant money for this purpose from Rotary Dist 6440, with the balance being funded by our club foundation.

Thanks to Brian Bieschke who applied for the District Grant on our club's behalf and who coordinated the ordering of coats with both Brightpoint and Operation Warm.

We’ve been donating new winter coats to kids at this facility annually since 2011. That equates to more than 1,200 coats over 14 years.

This annual initiative reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to its motto of “Caring About Kids & Community.” By combining practical help with heartfelt outreach, the coat donation not only met a critical need but also reminded families that they’re not alone.

Interact Club went to Encore Village for a fun afternoon with the seniors. The students learned axe throwing and competed in basketball Pop-A-Shot with the seniors. Great connections were made and fun was had by all.

Schaumburg AM Rotarians Tom Cunningham and Tom Gaudio are in the house at today's SBA Coffee & Contacts meeting that features a Non-Profits Expo showcasing local non-profit organizations that provide a variety of services to our community.

Several club signature projects and fundraisers are featured at our table including our annual new winter coat distribution at Schaumburg's Brightpoint Marletta Darnall Child & Family Center where we've donated more than 1200 new coats over the past 14 years. Also featured is our vocational scholarship program that includes professional grade entry level tools needed for students to continue their education and to launch a career in the auto mechanics trade (note the Cornwell tool box displayed behind our table).

Save the date for our Thursday, February 26, 2026 Souper Bowl of Soups fundraiser at our new location - the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg on Martingale Road - that features good fellowship, delicious soups and meaningful community networking & connections.

We've been caring for kids & our community for the past 35 years!

Cereal and collard greens and canned fruit, oh my!

That and many more non-perishable food items were donated by Schaumburg AM Rotary and packed into approximately 50 emergency food bags for distribution by the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry.

The bags are intended to help bridge the food insecurity gap of individuals who have asked for food assistance until they can connect with a more local-to-them food pantry who can serve their needs.

Thanks to our club’s community service chair Bill Paton for working with a local Aldi store to purchase the donated food and to Rotarians Mike Brow, Dawn Block, Dan Origer, Bill Paton and Sharon Perry who donated their time to assemble these bags and re-stock the pantry shelves

As the school year begins, most children arrive at school with backpacks full of supplies and a sense of excitement for the new school year ahead. But for kids from families fleeing domestic violence, the start of school can be marked by uncertainty, fear, and a lack of basic necessities.

That’s why this years’ donation of 25 back packs is more than just a donation — it is a message of hope.

Since 2016 Schaumburg AM Rotary has donated 25 backpacks annually filled with requested school supplies to families who reside in transitional housing provided by WINGS. To date that’s 190 back packs.

These donations directly benefit families rebuilding their lives through shelters and support programs. For many children, this backpack is the first new item they’ve received in months. It’s more than a school bag—it’s a symbol that someone cares.
