Today, on the final scheduled day of the legislative session, and just one week after passing a $268.5 billion state budget that does little to address New York's growing affordability crisis, Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee blocked my bill A.452 from coming to the floor for a vote.

A.452, which I sponsor alongside Senator Jake Ashby, would establish a "Retire Strong" tax credit for eligible New Yorkers age 65 and older. The credit would provide relief equal to 50% of qualifying property taxes paid, up to $6,500 annually.

This legislation is designed to ease the property tax burden on senior homeowners and help older New Yorkers remain in their homes and communities despite rising costs. At a time when New York ranks among the nation's leaders in outmigration, lawmakers were presented with a practical solution to support residents who have spent a lifetime contributing to our state.

Unfortunately, the majority chose to block that opportunity, turning their backs on seniors struggling with the high cost of living and sending yet another message that New York is becoming increasingly unaffordable for those who wish to stay and retire here.
