Research shows Black girls can face more frequent and harsher bias in classrooms. They are more often labeled disruptive and defiant — and tend to face more drastic punishment than other girls (teachers suspend and expel Black girls 4x as often as white girls). These kinds of biases continue into adulthood when Black girls grow up.
As adults, Black women are often subjected to disrespectful and undermining remarks at work. As a result, they are more than 2x as likely as women overall to change their mannerisms, tone, or speaking style. They are also more likely than women of other races and ethnicities not to speak up or share an opinion to avoid appearing difficult or aggressive.

These experiences take a mental toll on Black girls and women’s well-being, lowering their sense of belonging in school and at work. This and beyond, continue to educate yourself on the experiences of Black girls and women so you can learn how to be an ally.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and school staff in Schenectady affected by the loss of a young community member by a senseless act of violence. There are truly no words.
This is our community.

We took a moment this morning to process this tragedy with our own staff, as we have deep connections with students and staff in Schenectady schools.
Heather shared this image, one of a broken heart with sorrow, grief and pain.
But one wrapped in strength and love.

We are sending this energy into the Schenectady community this week. We hope you will do the same.

This week is ***dePreventionWeek. We’ve shared important information from the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention () about recognizing su***de warning signs.
By learning these warning signs, you can play a crucial role in helping to ***de.

If you notice any of these warning signs in someone, it’s important to take them seriously and encourage the person to seek professional help. Reaching out with compassion and support can make a significant difference. Be aware, be proactive, and let’s support one another.
