Chaosium Inc, makers of the rpg Call of Cthulhu and many other fine games is celebrating their 50 year anniversary. Part of the celebration includes giving away $500 worth of books and promos to game conventions across the country taking place in 2025. I've organized a small regional con in upstate NY- WoodsCon for the last 10 years. I applied for their Convention Support Pack last month for our Spring 2025 con. I had no illusions to think a 50 person con would ever be selected for such a honor. However earlier this month, I received word that, WoodsCon had indeed been selected! To say I am shocked is an understatement. This generous donation will be used as raffle prizes, gaming awards, and of course to run various con one shots. It is all very exciting. If you run/organize a small regional con(or even attend one- get the word out to the organizers). It's not too late for your con to also receive this award. Chaosium Inc.

What's the first thing you think of when I say Greg Kihn? The Break Up Song(Uh, uh, uh, oh, oh) or Our Love's in Jeopardy? Turns out he is just as good a author as he is a song writer. I came across his 1996 book Horror Show, it's a homage to Ed Wood. It supposes a 50's B horror director comes across real evidence of the supernatural. It's a fun read. if you are a fan of bad late night horror films or Svengoolie, this book will be in the box over the weekend.

Over the summer I read Grady Hendrix's Paperbacks from Hell. It's a history of the best(and worst) horror novels from the 70's and 80's. Most books highlighted are long out of print and difficult(and expensive) to find. I was able to find a copy of one of Grady's favorites- The Tribe by Bari Woods- a unusual story of revenge with a Jewish forklore slant. Look for it in the Atomic Rocket box this week.

Is anyone familiar with AMC's Dark Winds? The second season just wrapped up this fall. The show follows the adventures of the no nonsense(but RC Cola loving) detective Lt Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police. It is a very well done police procedural show with just a hint of the supernatural. It is based on Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn and Chee novels. Two of those novels are at the Atomic Rocket library this month. Check out the show and the books it was based on.

The Monster of Elendhaven is a novella(150ish pages) by Jennifer Giesbrecht. What it lacks in length, it makes up for in style and atmosphere. I'd call it fantasy horror- a monster stalks the gritty streets of a run down coastal city. It also has an sorcerer, an assassin, and political intrigue. If this floats your boat, it's available this week, along with some other sci-fi and mystery titles.

I don't read much fantasy these days, mostly just the cream of the crop- Joe Abercrombie, Brandon Sanderson. While rummaging around Maple Tree Books in Warrensburg, NY( great place, btw) I found Tim Power's The Drawing of the Dark. It was a fun read- taking place against the backdrop of the real world Ottoman Empire siege of Vienna in 1529. Power's injects a large dose of fantasy into the mix, including an very interesting take on Arthurian myth. If scimitar wielding Efreeti, mystical prophecies, and magic beer sounds up your alley- come by Atomic Rocket Lfl #132496 mid week to snag a copy.
