🚨 Community Health Alert: Increased Overdose Risk in Suburban Cook County 🚨

⚠️The Cook County Department of Public Health is sharing an important update following a recent alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding changes in the drug supply that are increasing the risk of overdose in the Chicagoland area.

A substance called medetomidine—a veterinary sedative—is now being found mixed with fentanyl. This combination can cause:
• Prolonged sedation
• Slowed heart rate
• Severe withdrawal symptoms
• Increased risk of overdose and death

⚠️ Even when naloxone is used, individuals may remain heavily sedated and require additional medical care.

🛑 What You Should Know:
• Carry naloxone and be ready to use it
• Naloxone works only if opioids are present
• In an emergency: Lay, Spray, Stay
• Call 911 immediately and say the person is “unresponsive”
• Do not use alone and avoid mixing substances
• Recovery may take longer due to additional substances

⚕️ Watch for Severe Withdrawal Symptoms:
Seek medical attention right away if someone experiences:
• Chest pain
• Persistent vomiting
• Confusion
• Changes in alertness

We loved spending time with District 81 preschool students as they learned about community helpers! 🚒💙

It was a great opportunity for our firefighters to connect with students alongside the SP Police Department and share how we work together to keep Schiller Park safe.

Recently, members of the Schiller Park Fire Department participated in an active threat response training with our partners from Harwood Heights, Norridge, and Norwood Park. These exercises ensure that police officers and firefighter/paramedics can move together quickly to provide protection and lifesaving care when seconds count.

➡️ When you set your clocks ahead for Daylight Saving Time, take a moment to check your smoke alarms too. Many newer alarms now have 10-year batteries, but it’s still important to test them monthly and replace batteries when needed.

It has been a busy (and heart-warming!) week here in our Village!

Chief Hatcher and members of the Schiller Park Fire Department had the pleasure of attending Kennedy School’s 2nd Grade Valentine’s Day Concert — what an incredible performance! 🎶💌 Thank you to the students and staff for sharing your talent and school spirit with us!

We were also honored to receive a special visit from the American Legion of Schiller Park & Franklin Park and the Women’s Auxiliary. We truly appreciate your continued support and partnership in serving our community. 🇺🇸

🏈🔥 Game Day Safety Reminder from Chief Hatcher & the Schiller Park Fire Department 🔥🏈

As we get ready for Super Bowl kickoff, we want everyone to safely enjoy the game, the food, and time with family & friends! Chief Hatcher and the Schiller Park Fire Department are sharing a few simple reminders to help keep your home safe on game day. 🏠

✅ Avoid overloading outlets
With crockpots, air fryers, TVs, and other electronics running, be mindful not to overload outlets.

🚫 Never use extension cords for cooking appliances
Plug cooking appliances directly into wall outlets only.

🍳 Stay in the kitchen while cooking
Keep an eye on the stove and create a kid-free zone around cooking areas.

🕯️ Keep decorations away from heat sources
Tablecloths, streamers, and party décor should be kept clear of open flames and heat.

🧯 Have a fire extinguisher ready
Make sure it’s working and easy to access — just in case.

🔔❤️ Giving back is a tradition we’re proud of!

The Schiller Park Fire Department was honored to continue our annual tradition of ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at Walgreens. Our firefighters came together across multiple shifts, all in the spirit of service and community.

As part of the celebration, the students enjoyed a special pizza party with our firefighters — sharing laughs, stories, and plenty of smiles! 🍕🤗
