Trick question: there are no pests in this video- just animals who specialize in pest control! This World Pest Day and every day, Lehigh Valley Zoo wants to break the stigma about animals many consider pests, and encourage our community to live Together with Nature.

Following our PACTS initiative, we encourage leaving no trace of our presence in natural areas, not littering (even fruits and vegetables can cause fatalities to animals on sides of roads), living in harmony with wildlife, and getting proper care for injured wildlife.

🦝 Racoons are known to go through trash bins, but that’s typically in suburban areas where food is scarce. Raccoons eat grubs, mice, earthworms, snails, slugs, small gophers, squirrels and carrion!
🐾Oppossums are thought of as rodents, but did you know they’re North America’s only marsupial? They’ve also been found to be a tick-magnet, and coupled with their grooming habits, helps eradicate the spread of ticks and Lyme disease!
🦊 Gray foxes are thought to be chicken hunters, but prefer smaller prey like rabbits, rats, insects, fruits, and vegetables!
🌲Porcupines are actually rodents who use their giant, orange teeth to prune trees and decreases forest density to give space for new growth!
🦨 Striped skunks are feared for their smell, but don’t worry! They only use their odor as a last ditch effort. Skunks are also feared by garden pests like beetles, grubs, and crickets, making skunks a gardeners best friend!

Happy Butterfly Education and Awareness Day! Today we’re highlighting our native garden habitat- Preston’s Place! In this area, we’re dedicated to planting native plants that benefit our local butterfly and bird populations.

Monarch butterflies rely on milkw**d plants to hatch and feed their caterpillars on. Although the adult butterflies can drink nectar from other plants, their caterpillars can only eat milkw**d! We plant common milkw**d and swamp milkw**d (the plants native to our region) so monarch butterflies can complete their migration across North America!

Native plants that support our local butterfly populations include purple cone flowers, butterfly w**d (the orange flower, not the purple bush!), bergamot, and goldenrod. Always double check if a plant is native to your region; we don’t want to accidentally plant invasive species when trying to do good!

Lehigh Valley Zoo is also proud of our involvement in the North American Monarch Butterfly SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program. By collaborating with other AZA-accredited institutions, we’re creating restoration and protection plans for both Monarch butterflies and their habitats!

(Pictured are a female monarch butterfly on swamp milkw**d, our Native Garden sign in Preston’s Place, an eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly on a purple cone flower, and a red admiral butterfly on a commemorative bench)

Happy International Ungulate Awareness Day! Today we’re celebrating our hoof-stock friends and promoting the protection of their species! 🦒🦬🦓🐖🐐🦙🐏

Ungulates are animals with hooves, but despite this common feature, they’re incredibly diverse! Today, we want to encourage our community to help us protect these incredible species. Many ungulates face poaching and habitat destruction, but one way you can locally support threatened species is by supporting AZA institutions, like us! AZA- accredited organizations collaborate to form restoration and protection plans for species and their habitats such as SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) and SSP (Species Survival Plan) programs. Supporting accredited Zoos and Aquariums is also supporting their efforts in these incredible programs!

Another way you can directly support giraffes at Lehigh Valley Zoo is by participating in our giraffe feeds every day between 11:15-12:15pm and 2-3pm (tickets required). Not only are you participating in giving the giraffes their meals, but 10% of ticket sales get donated to the Wild Nature Institute, whose research benefits giraffe populations and conservation of their species!

Join us in the comments with your favorite ungulate(s)!

Midweek motivation! Need a little pick me up? Lehigh Valley Zoo is open 7 days a week from 10-4pm! The best part? As a nonprofit organization, your visit directly supports our animal care and conservation efforts!

Mongoose lemurs, like Abby (left) and Mico (right), are native only to Madagascar, but due to habitat destruction and degradation, are classified as critically endangered. You can help mongoose lemurs and other Madagascar wildlife but purchasing Bird-Friendly products! This ensures the crop was shade-grown, meaning no rainforests were harmed in its growing process.

Pictured is our male mongoose lemur, Mico. You can tell male and female mongoose lemurs apart by their chin; males (like Mico) have a reddish beard while females (like Abby) have a white or gray beard!

Start your summer off cool, with this insulated tumbler painted by our Argentine Black & White Tegu, Morrie.
Morrie came to us from the streets of Houston, Texas, after his owner released him, most likely due to not knowing much about Tegus. Tegus are considered an invasive species, which cause a lot of destruction to an ecosystem due to lack of predators and the ability to outcompete native species!

We like to feature Morrie as the P part of our PACTS messaging: Purposeful Pet Ownership. Did you know by purchasing and owning an exotic animal, you could be supporting the illegal exotic pet trade? One more exotic pet in captivity is one less animal in the wild. This is resulting in species population numbers dropping drastically. The exotic pet trade is putting animals at risk and endangering entire species!

Purchasing this tumbler helps us care for our animal friends, like Morrie, and helps share our conservation messaging to the public!

Egg enrichment for Piper and Luani, the North American river otters of Lehigh Valley Zoo!

Enrichment is crucial for zoo residents because it provides them with mental stimulation and physical exercise, which benefits an animal’s wellbeing! This can be achieved through food, puzzles, and other visual stimuli. Another way we provide enrichment for Luani and Piper is through otter encounters- a private experience where you can get the chance to enter their habitat, make and place their enrichment, and feed them!

Lehigh Valley Zoo is a nonprofit and AZA-accredited organization; all of our zoo residents have their choice and control to participate in all zoo programs, and proceeds from these programs directly support our care for the animals and our conservation efforts!

Congratulations Lehigh Valley Zoo Class of 2026! As the school year comes to a close, we want to highlight our senior class with Senior ZOOperlatives!

Some animal students excelled, some needed to redo a year (we’re looking at you, Bane) but overall, all of our animal friends help us in our mission of connecting our community with nature to empower people to protect wildlife.

Let us know who you think fits their title the best and visit our graduating class every day of the week from 10-4pm! Lehigh Valley Zoo is a nonprofit organization; your visit directly supports our conservation efforts!

Disclaimer: the animals aren’t actually graduating; they were all born in the year 2008, making them 18 years old this year! All except Bane, who is 19 (that’s what happens when your eyes are bigger than your brain!).
