Dumping tires—or any other type of solid waste—is illegal and unacceptable in Schoharie County. Our municipalities work hard to protect our natural landscape and provide safe, responsible disposal options for residents.

What can you do with waste tires?

♻ Drop them off at the Schoharie County Transfer Station *Fees set by 3rd party recycling vendor*

Auto tires: $8 per tire
Truck tires: $18 per tire
Large tire loads: $300 per ton ($50 minimum)

♻ Take them to a local tire shop — Most tire retailers will accept old tires when you purchase replacements, and many shops will recycle tires for a disposal fee.

♻ Check with your town — Some municipalities offer seasonal tire collection days at little to no cost for residents. Contact your town office or highway department to see if a collection event is available in your community.

♻ Get creative! — Give old tires a second life by turning them into garden planters, outdoor furniture, swings, obstacle course features, raised garden beds, or other DIY projects.

By disposing of tires responsibly or finding a creative way to reuse them, you help keep Schoharie County clean, safe, and beautiful for everyone.

Another successful Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection is in the books! Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, including the 364 county residents who participated!

With your support, we diverted the following items from the waste stream:
♻️ 1,470 lbs of CRT TVs/Monitors
♻️ 906 lbs of Non-CRT TVs/Monitors
♻️ 4,396 lbs of Other Electronics
♻️ 442 lbs of Misc. Solid Waste
♻️ 315 gal of Misc. Liquid Waste
♻️ 469 lbs of Fluorescent Lightbulbs
♻️ 2,100 gal of Hazardous Paint
and SO MUCH MORE!

Can't wait until next year? ELECTRONICS are accepted YEAR-ROUND at the Schoharie County Transfer Station!

We have filled our first battery recycling box! 🎉

This box has helped keep nearly 40 lbs of batteries out of landfills, and we're just getting started! Schoharie County residents can drop off batteries at the County Office Building (284 Main Street, Schoharie, NY) during business hours.

NOTE: All batteries must be INDIVIDUALLY INSULATED by placing each battery in a CLEAR PLASTIC BAG or by covering the terminals with CLEAR TAPE.
