Newsletter Update: 🍂 Water Department Fall Update💧

As fall approaches, our Water Department is preparing for important seasonal maintenance.

🚰 Water Main Flushing & Fire Hydrants
Each spring and fall, we flush the water distribution system to clean the water mains, move fresh-treated water throughout the system, and check our fire hydrants.

🌳 Sewer Root Control
Each October, the Borough treats areas of the sewer system affected by tree roots. This helps prevent blockages and protects our aging sewer infrastructure while allowing our beautiful mature trees to remain part of the community.

🚧 Columbia Avenue Water Main Project
The Borough will also be replacing the water main on Columbia Avenue in Cressona due to several breaks in recent years. The road will be closed to all traffic during construction, so please plan to use an alternate route.

These projects are important investments in keeping our water and sewer systems reliable and our community running smoothly.

The Schuylkill Haven Borough Tax Collector’s office is available by appointment for the remainder of 2026.

💰 Tax Payments: Borough property tax and per capita tax bills are currently in the penalty period through December 31. Unpaid bills will be turned over to Tax Claim for collection, along with additional fees.

Last-Minute Taxpayers:
The Tax Collector’s office will be open December 28–31, noon–2:00 p.m. for cash or money order payments only.

⚠️ Anyone paying after December 14 should use cash or money order to ensure the payment can be properly credited by December 31.

Yard waste will be collected every second Friday of the month, and every Friday during November.

🚫 Please do not mix household garbage with yard waste/compost. Mixed loads will not be picked up.

🎒⚡ Back-to-School Means Back-to-Safety!⚡🎒

As students head back to school, it's the perfect time to remind everyone about the importance of electrical safety at home and around our community.

Keep these simple tips in mind:
✅ Never play on or around utility poles or power lines.
✅ Stay away from transformer boxes and electrical substations.
✅ Only plug electrical cords into outlets—never insert other objects.
✅ Test your GFCI outlets monthly using the "Test" and "Reset" buttons.
✅ Unplug small appliances when they're not in use.
✅ Make sure smoke alarms are working and never leave cooking unattended.

A few simple precautions can help prevent injuries and keep your family safe all year long.

South Schuylkill Unified Committee for Community Revitalization (SSU) is seeking an AmeriCorps Community Revitalization and Economic Development Member to serve with the organization through CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps for the 2026–2027 service year.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in community revitalization, economic development, nonprofit leadership, public service, or community engagement to gain hands-on professional experience while making a difference in communities throughout southern Schuylkill County.

Working alongside SSU's Executive Director and community partners, the AmeriCorps member will help engage residents and volunteers, support local businesses, assist with downtown and community revitalization initiatives, conduct community outreach and research, and participate in projects designed to strengthen the region. The member will also have opportunities to attend meetings and trainings with municipal leaders, elected officials, nonprofit and business partners, and community and economic development professionals.

Benefits of full-time AmeriCorps service include:

$21,415 total living allowance during the service term

Free health insurance

Childcare assistance for eligible members

$7,395 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service, which may be used for eligible educational expenses or qualified student loans

Student loan forbearance and potential interest repayment for qualifying loans

Professional development, training, mentorship, networking, and hands-on career experience

SSU is particularly interested in applicants who are passionate about helping communities realize their own vision for their neighborhoods. Previous experience in community or economic development is not required. Curiosity, initiative, strong communication skills, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to community service are especially valued.

The AmeriCorps member will also be encouraged to bring their own ideas and perspectives to SSU's work and may have the opportunity to develop and lead a capstone-style community project during their service year.

Have you ever wondered how electricity travels from a power plant to your light switch? It’s quite a journey!

🔹 1. Generation: Electricity is produced at a power plant using generators.

🔹 2. Transmission: Electricity is increased to very high voltage so it can travel long distances across the transmission grid.

🔹 3. Local Substation: The voltage is lowered and electricity moves onto local distribution lines.

🔹 4. Transformers: Pole-mounted or ground-level transformers reduce the voltage again to make it safe for homes and businesses.
