We are saddened to hear of the passing of Scio local and former Scio volunteer firefighter David Taylor. Please keep the Taylor family in your prayers.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is mourning federal wildlife officer David Taylor, 38 of Scio, Oregon, who is believed to have died while helping evacuate residents threatened by the Railroad South Fire.

Officer Taylor was going door to door alongside local emergency crews helping families get to safety. His last contact with dispatch came while he was helping a family evacuate their home. Evidence recovered from a structure where he was working to help a resident escape indicates that he died during the evacuation effort. Formal identification remains pending with the medical examiner.

Everything we know about David's actions reflects extraordinary courage, selflessness and devotion to duty.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, fellow officers and all who served alongside him. We will never forget his service.

The 47th annual Covered Bridge Bike Ride, sponsored by the Mid Valley Bike Club, is being held in the area today. There are 4 routes that vary in length and include the surrounding area. Please watch out for bikers.

Tonight's the night! We are hosting National Night Out at the fire stations in Scio and Crabtree. In Scio, we will kick things off at 6pm. All the food is provided. In Crabtree, the fire district will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, and watermelon. You bring your favorite side dish. Hope to see you tonight!

Congrats to Scio volunteer firefighter and Scio High School grad Nick Riedel for lateralling to LCSO. We can't wait to see you patrolling the mean streets of Linn County!

Please join us in welcoming back Patrol Deputy Nick Riedel, who was sworn in yesterday by Sheriff Michelle Duncan!

Nick began his law enforcement career with us as a Reserve Deputy before spending three years with the Silverton Police Department. He now returns home, and we are thrilled to have him back!

As a lateral hire, Nick will not need to attend the Police Academy again. Instead, he will complete in-house training before returning to the road on his own, serving the citizens of Linn County.

LINN COUNTY BURN BAN

Starting Immediately on August 3, 2026, the Linn County Fire Defense Board is taking proactive measures to address the heightened risk of fire by implementing a series of fire restrictions.

In alignment with ODF's assessment, the Linn County Fire Defense Board has announced restrictions on all open fires, including the prohibition of recreational and cooking fires originating from open fire pits that utilize wood or charcoal. This includes agricultural burning, but does not include the use of gas-fired barbeques or pellet barbeques.

The decision to enact these restrictions is in direct response to the increased fire risk and Red Flag Warnings expected this week. The Linn County Fire Defense Board will adhere to ODF's lead and uphold these limitations as long as the extreme fire danger persists. Restricting open fires is a critical component in managing local resources effectively.

Given the heightened fire risk, it is imperative that all individuals exercise extreme caution when dealing with fire-related activities, towing (chains), and recreational pursuits. Pacific Power has also cautioned about potential selective grid shutdowns to preempt transmission line issues, particularly in high-temperature and windy conditions.

The Scio Fire District is actively looking for citizens just like you to become volunteers. Whether your interest is in firefighting or emergency medical services, we've got a place for you. No experience is necessary and we will do all of the training.

Volunteering is a great way to serve the community, learn new skills, and make a positive impact on the lives of the people around you. Volunteering is also a great way to gain valuable experience for those of you who plan on perusing a career in the fire or medical fields.
