Our hearts are heavy. We are grieving a dear friend who meant so much to us.
Chris Matthews began his political career right here in Scituate at just 20 years old, joining the SDTC in 2010. We took him under our wing — but it wasn’t long before he was teaching us, developing new ideas, and becoming one of the sharpest political minds in the Commonwealth. We were proud to name him our Democrat of the Year in 2015.
Chris went on to serve U.S. Representative Bill Keating for more than fifteen years, eventually as his District Outreach and Communications Director. He founded the South Shore Democratic Caucus to unite our communities and organize canvassing trips into out-of-state districts, all in the fight to flip the House blue. No task was ever too big or too small for him. He was a true public servant and patriot — and, best of all, just such a nice man.
Chris passed away unexpectedly at just 36 years old, with so much future still ahead of him. Our hearts are with his partner Molly, his son Eli, and everyone who loved him.
Rest easy, Chris. Scituate — and all of us who got to work alongside you — are better for having known you. We love you, Chris.

Visiting hours: Sunday, July 12, 4:00–7:00 PM, McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA
Graveside service: Monday, July 13, 10:00 AM, St. Mary’s Cemetery, Scituate
