Last week, the Scotch Plains Office of Emergency Management met with representatives from the American Red Cross to discuss community preparedness and resources available to our residents.

We received some great information that we want to share with the community:

🚨 FREE Smoke Alarm Installation

The Red Cross is working with local fire departments and community partners to provide free smoke alarms and home fire safety visits. Working smoke alarms can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death from a house fire.

Residents can request a free home fire safety visit and smoke alarm installation through the Red Cross New Jersey Region at: redcross.org/NJsmokealarms

📱 Red Cross Emergency App

The free American Red Cross Emergency App provides preparedness information, National Weather Service alerts, real-time weather maps, hurricane tracking, and information about shelters and services following a disaster. The app is available in English and Spanish through the App Store and Google Play.

Preparedness starts before an emergency happens. We encourage all Scotch Plains residents to take advantage of these resources and make sure your household is prepared.

Weather Advisory Scotch Plains

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for our area until 9pm tonight. As usual, please take proper precautions to prepare!

Another weather advisory in effect today for our area. Please stay alert and continue to prepare yourselves for heavy wind and rain, in addition to possible power outages. We will continue to provide updates as we get them. The PSE&G information is pinned to the top of our page for your convenience. We have also listed below for reference.

If you experience a power outage, please report it directly to PSE&G by calling 1-800-436-PSEG (tel:1-800-436-PSEG), text (7734), or through the PSE&G mobile app or website. Do not assume the outage has already been reported. Reporting outages directly helps crews identify affected areas and prioritize restoration efforts.

Friendly reminder that the Scotch Plains Library is open today as a cooling center until 5pm. Feel free to stop in cool off.

The severe thunderstorm potential has increased for this afternoon and evening with the greatest risk near and NW of the I-95 corridor and most of Delmarva. The primary risk is locally damaging winds. Locally heavy rain leading to flash flooding is also possible.

If you are without power, or have damage from the thunderstorm that just passed through our area, please report it to PSE&G by calling 1-800-436-PSEG (tel:1-800-436-PSEG), texting (7734), or through the PSE&G mobile app or website. Do not assume the outage has already been reported. Reporting outages directly helps crews identify affected areas and prioritize restoration efforts.

PSE&G is currently in storm mode and is unable to provide accurate ETAs at this time. But they are out and working. So it is important to report your outage and/or storm damage to them.

Lastly, a friendly reminder to please avoid down power lines as they could still be energized.

Scotch Plains Weather Advisory Friday, August 7, 2026 

Hot and humid conditions remain today and into tomorrow, with the possibility of scattered thunderstorms affecting the area. The Scotch Plains Library is open during regular business hours today and tomorrow (9am-5pm) as a cooling center for those that would like to stop in.
