The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm watch for our area until 8:00 PM MDT.

How can you prepare for inclement weather?

- For the most part everyone has cell phones, and outdoor sports are popular this time of the year, ensure you are checking the weather frequently so you can seek shelter sooner, rather than later.

- Secure your property. We've all seen videos where the neighbors five blocks down gets a new trampoline, unsecured property can pose a hazard to utility lines, and people should they become airborne.

- If you have medical equipment that you need 24/7 such as an oxygen concentrator, ensure you have a battery backup, or spare bottles of oxygen to switch over to.

- What was once referred to as "Tornado Sirens", are now referred to as "Warning Sirens", they are only intended to alert people who are outside so that they can seek shelter. They may sound due to significant hail sizes, or a tornado, regardless if they go off for any reason, seek shelter.

Today, Jared graduated the Wyoming State Firefighter Academy Class 2026-1 after 13 weeks of training!

Jared will joint the ranks of Scottsbluff Fire with A-Shift here in the coming weeks.

Jared is also the first to attend an academy with our fire department. The intent of sending someone to the academy is to give our new hires the foundation and appropriate training they need to be successful with their career.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026-01!!!

It's been a busy week for us, here is a overview of some things we've done this week:

- C-Shift did some SCBA Training with Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday evening

- Our Fire Marshal went to the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center and sat through some training with dispatch to better understand some of the newer programs they are using to help push information to our CAD systems for calls.

- B-Shift and the Fire Marshal did a walk through of the UNL Extension Center today so we could familiarize ourself with the building.

- B-Shift also did a presentation for a local daycare, and unfortunately the visit was cut short due to a call that came in, but the kids were more then excited to watch the trucks leave with the lights and sirens.

We'll have some more exciting news tomorrow, so stay tuned! 😉

Yesterday evening, shortly after 21:00, Morrill Fire requested mutual aid from multiple agencies for a grass fire north of Henry. Brush 1 responded along with several other departments and was relieved shortly before 2AM.

During that time, there were several other fires going on within the area putting a strain on resources. Scottsbluff Fire did a call back, and several staff members came in to assist for subsequent calls if it was needed.

Today agencies are still assisting with the fire north of Henry, and the weather is in favor for significant fire behavior today due to high winds, and high temperatures. While we can't control act of mother nature, we can all control our own actions, and be cautious about what we are doing to help mitigate a fire breaking out, and some of those include, but are not limited to:

- Don't drag your chains when towing a trailer
- Don't discard your cigarette butts out the window
- Keep vehicles off dry grass
- Keep sparks away from dry vegetation
- Don't be burning when weather conditions are not favorable

And if for some reason a fire does break out in your area, please, respect emergency vehicles and give them the space they need so personnel can work safely.

Upcoming weather outlook:

Wednesday:
- High of 88
- SE winds around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph

Thursday:
- High of 83
- West wind 15 to 25 mph, increasing to 25 to 35 mph in the afternoon with gusts up to 50 mph

Fire Danger risk for both days: 3 (very high risk)

Even with recent moisture it only takes a few hours of warm weather to dry out fuels again. At this time the City of Scottsbluff Fire Department has no burn permits issues so no burning should be occurring within city limits. You may still use burn pits, and outdoor fireplaces as those do not require a burn permit, you may not however burn yard waste.

About a month ago we had posted about an incident that occurred at The Village. During that incident we identified some gaps regarding response, evacuation and other minor issues. Over the last month we have met with facility management, and staff to complete an After Action Review, outlining some items that can make future incidents more efficient. Today we met with occupants on the Independent Living side to discuss appropriate actions they need to take during the next incident, should that occur.

We appreciate the working relationships we have with facilities such as The Village and their willingness to have open discussions with staff and residents to ensure a positive outcome for any future incidents.
