One of the most harmful myths about child sexual abuse is that it only happens β€œsomewhere else.”

The reality is that child sexual abuse can happen in any community, regardless of income level, location, race, religion, or background. It can happen in neighborhoods that feel safe. In trusted spaces. In communities where people believe, β€œThat would never happen here.”

Prevention starts when adults move beyond assumptions and choose awareness, education, and proactive action instead. Every child deserves safe environments. Every community has a role to play in protecting children. πŸ’™

MBF Safety Rule #4: Talk It Up πŸ—£οΈ

Everyday moments are the perfect time to talk with kids about safety! Safety conversations don't need a special moment, use car rides, meals, and playtime to talk with kids about safe vs. unsafe situations and how to spot Red Flags. Let them know they can always come to you, no matter what. And don't forget to Talk It Up with other adults too, an informed community is a safer one.

When we normalize safety conversations, we empower kids to speak up.

MBF Safety Rule #3: Make a Move

If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and take action. If a child opens up about abuse or bullying, praise them for telling you and act immediately. πŸ’™

Here's how you can Make a Move:
βœ… Speak up when something doesn't look right
βœ… Foster safe, trusting relationships with children in your life
βœ… Empower kids to speak up

To report bullying, contact the school or organization where it occurred. To report abuse, contact your local DHR.

Report unsafe online behaviors to law enforcement.

MBF Safety Rule #2: Spot Red Flags 🚩

Adults play a powerful role in keeping kids safe! Teach children about personal boundaries, safe vs. unsafe situations, and how to recognize Red Flag behaviors, online and off. Make sure they know the correct names for their private body parts and that they should always tell a Safe Adult if something doesn't feel right.

When adults start the conversation early, it makes all the difference.
