Yesterday, Flagstaff Sister Cities, in partnership with the Flagstaff Fire Department, had the distinct honor of hosting visiting firefighters from Alamos and Navojoa, Sonora, Mexico.
A highlight of the exchange was a powerful presentation and dialogue led by Flagstaff firefighter Breanna Dudzinski and Captain Katie Brown, who facilitated a meaningful conversation on the experiences of women in the fire service. The discussion was enriched by the participation of Cuerpo de Bomberos de Navojoa y Protección Civil Municipal Navojoa Bomberos Deputy Fire Chief Luz Maria Luna, whose leadership and perspective brought valuable depth to the dialogue.
What emerged was a shared understanding that transcends borders—women firefighters around the world continue to navigate many of the same challenges, including access to properly fitted PPE and gear, as well as pathways to leadership advancement.
Flagstaff Sister Cities partnered with Scottsdale Sister Cities to bring the Mexican firefighters to northern Arizona for fire service exchange as part of the sister cities global movement. The visiting firefighters also toured Yarnell Hill Fire Memorial and Grand Canyon National Park.
This exchange exemplifies the strength of international partnerships and the importance of creating spaces where professionals can learn from one another, elevate shared challenges, and advance solutions together. Through collaboration and dialogue, we move closer to a more inclusive and effective fire service—locally and globally.
